Tires 2 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
|
My bike has about 51K miles on it. The last time the rear tire was changed was at 39K miles (summer of '08). The front was put on at 29K miles. Tires still show pretty good tread. I've never gotten this much miles from MC tires before. So that's about 12K on the rear and about 22K on the front. Should I change them?

Metezler's are going to give you some great mileage if you are watching your air pressure, as far as changing them, depends on if they are worn out or not. I hear some stories of people getting a lot of mileage out a set of those.

If you don't see any serious cracking on the sidewalls, the tread is still good, and the riding is well-controlled, I'd say you're good to go slyguy.

I consider them a lot already. I usually ride over a screw or something that makes me replace them sooner. How many miles have you all gotten on Mezler's? I don't want to change them too soon; if I can hold off another 1-3K more miles. You know, the sooner I replace them now is the sooner I replace the next set. Trying to get the most out of my tires without it being unsafe.

I didn't see any cracking. She does slide a bit from the rear when I hard brake on the rear, but she's always done that.

I think they all slide a bit if you lock up the rear tire......nature of a motorcycle.
If you have good tread & no bad cracking I would say keep on truckin' (or bikin' , man, and let us all know how many miles you get out of them.

Wow that's great mileage. I had a dunlop cruismax last 13000 the rest of my tires have been 7-8000. I wouldn't change the tire as long as it still has tread left. Unless your planning a long ride of several thousand miles then ride it till you need it.
Plus I sent you a p.m.

There are tread wear indicators built into the tire that you should look at also.

If you look around the edge of the tread there are 6 marks at 60 degrees apart that show where the tread wear indicators are.Dunlop & bridgestone use a triangle, Avon uses a cobra snake head, Metzler uses the letters TWI. If you find the marks and look out in the middle you will see about a half inch high spot in a tread line. When that high spot is even with the surface of the tire it is worn out and needs replacement. As long as there is room between the tire surface and the indicators the tire is good to go.
