HANDLING 2 Years, 6 Months ago
HI GUY'SI AM NEW TO THIS SITE BUT HAVE OVER 38YRS EXP RIDING BIKES ON THE STREET.

Anyway, question is i just bought an 06 silverado 1700 with ony 4,700 miles on it like new which runs great but i have few handling questions.

I noticed when i was out on the open raoa when the wind hits the large windscreen man that really makes the bike unsable/kinda jumpy feeling, anyone else run into this issue with a RS silverado with lrg stock windscreen?

I did move it otthe lower postion whch did seem to help that some but then the wind hits the top of my helmet and when over approx 50mph or sothe wind buffets me helmet hard enough to be a real PIA .

Now with the wind screen at highest setting have have no wind issues behind the sreen but it make the from fork/bike jumpy o open road esp on windy day and if i ,lower screen for little less of a handling issue then my helment gets bffitted all over the place over 50mph.

My wife could feel how unsteady the bike felt at higher speeds with wind screen at higher setting but she could still leef it at ower setting too,its kinda spooky at times.

So i guess the best solution would be to remove the screen entirely and get slammed all the time air at higher speeds which get tiring in my mid 50's or maybe one of you guys know of an aftermarket wind screen that more arodynamic as to not affect the fork as much as high speeds so bike stays more stable tats also high enough to keep the air from buffitting my helmet & head all over the place too,i am approx 5'-9" tall if that makes any diff on windscreen recommendation.

Any solutions or suggestions for a better more arodynamic wind screen (esp one that extends out in front of hand grips for cooler weather) that may handle better and be high enough to stop buffitting of my helemt/head would be greatly appreciated. Please if possible include where to buy it/mfg/& pt etc so i can chk out and or buy the correct one your suggesting .

Thanks...Scott

I have an 07 Silverado with the windshield and other than on extremely windy days or for a few moments when passing large trucks on the interstate, she's rock solid on the road.

I know a number of the guys on here have fairings which are probably more aerodynamic and would also give you the hand protection your looking for, maybe they can give you more info on that aspect.

Congrats on the Roadie and welcome!

I have used the tall windshield, short windshield and the fairing. The only time I've had any real issues was when the tire was under inflated and I didn't notice it or I had a Dunlop on the front end. I had some real stability issues with the front end. I even went to the point of removing the fairing and having the "stealer" check the bearings on the front end. No issue was noted, however, the tire was worn and needed replacement soon. I told them to replace it with a Bridgestone and all got better immediately. So.....my advice is to check your tires for proper inflation and wear first.
I purchased a set of Bucks lowers a long time ago and that helps with buffeting behind the windshield for sure....and you can crank the bars around if you have some crash bars. Some folks have purchased the Harley stainless lowers and profess that those work equally well but need slight modification if i recall correctly.

I've also had stability issues if the tires were low on air. another thing to check is the rear tire alingment. if it is not lined up right the bike will feel unstable

I picked up an 01 Roadie Silverado and haven't had any issues. I do check
the air pressure often though. A quik question though, what are these
buck lowers and what will they do for me ? I get a punch of air right in the
throat from under the factory windshield.

Thanks,
Chris

Bucks Lowers

Here is a old pic with the lowers. Look under the shield, next to the fork leg.

Don't ask me how, but they make a world of difference, almost getting rid of helmet buffeting completely.

Yea, like Paul said...they get rid of most of the wind coming up from under the windshield into your chest and face. Not sure it cures instability, but it does help the helmet bouncing around....another thing if you have crash or highway bars....dependng on what you have on you R* some lowers don't work because they hit the bars. if you notice the pic from paul, there is a notch cut in the lower to allow full turn without hitting the bar with the lower. Like i said earlier, some run some chrome harley lowers that they had to do minor mods on them to fit.

Agree with all: Lowers, almost any type, will make a huge difference with buffeting.

In addition, I took a dremel and shaped the stock windshield's mounting bracket to make the windshield just a bit more upright. I ground out the lower mounting points so the windshield is allowed to pivot just a bit forward before tightening the bolts. Sends the air up over my head just a bit better at freeway speeds.

But I never feel like my Roadie is unstable. I'd be checking tire pressures, worn rear tire, steering head bearings, axle bolts, etc.
