Clifford is right on this one. I always ran mine past the tread wear indicator knowing it's not cool but hating to change the tire with tread left. Yes you can plug that tire, best to dismount and boot. But no tire guy will tell ya that, (pretty much) Because it can dislodge and loose air quickly and cause you to wipe out. But You can also Boot and tube it and get your mileage out of it even safer. I plugged an Avon at 300 miles and ran it out to past tread wear indicators taking two long trips. IMHO when you get ready to change I would go with the same set unless they have changed compounds. I just changed a set in July and the handeling got sooo much better. It wasn't bad but I really hadn't noticed how much I was having to lean into it or how much I was countering on the bars. They can be plugged,but I feel that is for emergencies only. There are Mushroom shaped plugs that have to be installed from the inside and can't fall out. Personally I feel that the best thing to do is install a tube, that will get you the use of the remaining tread safely. It's a must have. Everyone should carry one and someone should buy me one! I'll test it out for ya! But WAIT! I know someone's going to mention sealing the spokes, but I wonder how that affects adjusting the spokes when it's time to balance; do you have to reseal? Yes my Rear tire is a Car Tire, it's a front tire OR a rear tire, but now it's a Bike Tire! But, My Front tire is actually a Rear Tire, up front. Being so It's always still a rear tire. So what did you mean? I know you believe you understand what you think I said, But I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant! I think that device will patch any tire beyond any patch I have already ran. I'll run just about any tire I patched myself, How else can you get experience with flat tires on an MC? Only 1 so far and if it was a CT I would have known before it was a problem. Ya know there are some who have run Darkside on both ends!
