Could be the sending unit inside your tank. They can go out on ya from time to time. Disconnect the green connector that sits just behind the tank (got to pull your seat off first, of course), pull the tank off, turn it upside down, , unscrew the bolts and pull the sending unit out. See if it's binding, bent, etc. You might be able to adjust it, or you may have to replace it.

If that isn't the problem, you'd need to get a new meter assembly. I don't believe you can replace just the fuel gauge. Someone else may chime in.
