PC or Mac? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I know this is not a MC topic but I am curious and would like to know a couple of things that all of you might be able to help me with if you would be so kind.

I would like to know if you have a PC or a Mac, and if so, what influenced you to buy or build the one you did. I'd like to know name brands if you bought them and WHY did you go with the one you have, if you know, was it price, commercial, work, or the sales person? Some people build their own and if so, tell me what you built, what parts, OS, and if you can, why..

I build computers for a living and I know what goes into a computer and how to make them faster, better and last longer. I also resell Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, Asus, Spartan and many others.

Can you help me with this brother to brother survey?

Thanks, Darn

PC, I've been working with them so long, it's second nature. I just don't like the security issue with using Microsoft. I do upgrades for family and friends, but only on the PC. I just feel more comfortable. I have used a Mac, but not enough to make a comment on them. When anyone I know buys another computer, I'm the first in-line to to get the old system. I just do simple upgrades to resell to someone in need of one. I haven't heard of anyone who has used the new OS Windows 7, I would like to hear those thoughts as well.

I've been using the Windows 7 OS for a few months now and love it!

I think you already know about my situation Don, but will weigh in anyway.

I build my own for both office and home office. I use gigabyte boards and nvidea graphics controllers. I do this because I run Linux and know what will work best with it. I also prefer AMD processors (something we can debate someday).

I do have a laptop. I have a recent Intel based Asus model (for compatibility reasons - and its a good name with good quality parts).

Most of my peers at work run Macs.

Can't convert the family, Daughter runs a MAC (I suspect because its cool). Son and wife are PC people and both are using Windows XP.

All the reports I have heard (from real users) about Windows 7 sound great. I truly hope its that good. Otherwise the family is staying on XP, and its getting pretty dated now.

Edit note: Didn't account for the two kids who are married and not living at home anymore. My other daughter runs Linux (her husband works for Google) and other son is Windows XP.

Curious about Linux. I understand the open source concept but have never actually played with it (not a real techie ). My nephew runs almost exclusively Linux (super computer techie) and he loves it. There's so many versions out there which one would be the best for a newbie?

Although I mainly use a Toshiba laptop now with Vista I like to build my own desktops. I have always had good luck with Asus boards and AMD processors. I'm not a power user so I get the best pieces up to the price jump. In other words, the processor and the boards will usually increase in price and/or speed in small amounts until you get to a certain point then the price jumps much more than the speed does. That where I buy.
I've considered Linux many times and I may give it a try next time round but I've always been a Windows guy.

My first teaching gig, I started off on an Apple IIe with dual 5 1/4 floppies and though I was all that! (Never touched one all the way through college.) Taught myself AppleWorks and created my first gradebook probgram that year.

Then I changed schools and got Mac (Plus, I think).

My first home computer was a Mac, but by then my new school system was switching everyone to Windows.

I've done Windows ever since. Worked my way up from the earliest versions, but stopped at XP Pro. I'm in the market, Don. My current PC is about 5-6 years old and really sloooooooowing down. So, Don, I may take ya' up if that's a real offer.

I have Sony Vaio and Gateway Laptops, and the desk-top was originally an old IBM but a friend of mine who works on computers for the Army has done so much to it I have no idea what to call it anymore. I got each of them based on price, maybe dumb reason but hey thats me pinching my pennies. My folks had a Mac and what a pain in the #$$ to do anything with it for me but for them it has been terrific.

Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY. John F. Kennedy Aug. 1963
