Help! * electrical power gone! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Last night when I went out to my bike to head home, I pulled the choke, popped it into nuetral and turn the key to the on position. The lights turned on, the gauges lit up and the needles started to cycle. That's when I hit the starter switch and everything went dead. The needles on the speedometer and gas gauges froze in place during thier cycle. I usually wait until they finish but not this time.

There is no power to anything, gauges, lights or starter. I checked all the fuses, including the main. The battery has power. I checked the switch with a meter and it's fine.

Any ideas? I did a search, but didn't find much about something like this. Anyone else have something like this happen?

Thanks, Ratl.

Make sure your terminals are clean and tight, make sure ground is good. Take terminals loose scrape the battery top and both sides of terminals CAREFULLY don't short anything out. Put a volt meter on the battery and try starting if it drops voltage either dead or dying batt.

Yes that happens if the terminals are dirty or are not tight on the battery. Clean every thing up and use dome diaelectric grease on them and you should be good.

The battery and connections are fine, power is going to the main fuse. I left it at work last night and I'll get to it again tomorrow.

It acted exactly like the main fuse had blown and that's what I originally thought it was. Unfortunatly, not. If it was a short, one of the fuses should have blown. I checked the switch and it's operating normally, however, I didn't check that power was getting to the switch while I was in there. Doh.

I guess I'll have to get it towed home so that I can get into it more. Then I'll trace the power from the main fuse on.

Because of the way it occurred, I was just hoping someone else has had a similar experience. I still thought it might be because I hit the starter switch before the electrical systems finished cycling but it's probably just coincidence.

Ratl.

Good chance when you go to get it if you try and start it then it will fire right up. That is usually the way it goes. It may have enough time to dry out and crank just fine. I will cross my fingers for ya. Then all ya have to do is figure out why it did it that is the hard part.

Check to see that you have power to both big post on your starter relay while pushing the starter switch. If you do check connections to the starter. If you don't check for power from the starter switch to the relay.

I appreciate the tips but, I have NO power going anywhere. No gauges, no lights, no switches. Nothing. The battery is fine, the fuses are good and power goes to the main fuse at least. The main key switch is fine also.

Thanks, Ratl.
