Re:Horrible Gas Milage??? HELP PLEASE!! 2 Years, 6 Months ago

I want to thank everyone on this site for their
involvment. I read the topics as often as possible
and find the questions I have are being answered
before I can post them.

This is one of those topics, I too am learning alot
about the carb I would never have tryed it alone.

Curt,
I also have to thank you for the manual, it's been
helpful but only to a point. The form is what makes
the book make sense.

Here's how I set mine. Works perfectly. LINK
I think this is the easiest way.

Used this link and it did need to be adjusted, it was higher than even that listed for the 03's so set it down to the 04 level and didn't get a chance to ride a whole lot but in the little that I did ride today it really seemed to be a much better throttle response, might just be wishful thinking but it really did seem better. Thanks again, hopefully weather cooperates and can get some miles on her tommorrow and see where I am at now.

OK here we go again, another 300 miles this morning and I am still stuck at 36 mpg I guess if nothing else its consistent, again bike runs like a champ ....... just can't get the miles I am wanting, or I guess more accurately WISHING for.

So far I have trimmed the choke knob, put in a 35 pilot to go with the 175 main, moved the PMS to 2 1/2 turns out, cleaned my air filter, put NGK iridiums in, moved from the fourth to the third clip on the needle, adjusted the float level, and run seafoam through it......

Next move .......... Thinking of either putting MR C's big air kit on next for some better air, or dropping the main down to 170???? Decisions Decisions, any thoughts guys.

Drop it down to the Mikuni 170, have you tried to go to 2 turns out on the pilot screw? Might be easier to turn the screw before you have to drop the float bowl. just a thought

Erb I have to be honest and had my fingers crossed that you would be online today Is there a way to get to the pilot screw without taking the tank off and the carb off and all that?? Haven't really look but that would be so much easier.

It's a pain sometimes, also depending on the filter. Just have to be careful which way you turn the screw, you want to go in which is clockwise. It's like an optical illusion when the hand is pointing up. I always look at my fingers holding an imaginary small screwdriver, and turn my fingers. Also some have gone with after market pilot screw that can be turned by hand, I never got one of them, seemed a waste, once the pilot screw is dialed, really only needs to adjusted for winter and summer. Those who have to constantly adjust it and or the idle screw, then something else is going on, which usually is an air leak or vacuum leak.

My carb is dialed in, other than some manifold leaks I found recently (old gaskets, I don't use o-rings anymore) and once the engine is warm, my idle stays put and only have to adjust pilot screw for any cold weather that last for more than a couple days. I'm also running the 42hsr and pilot screw is on top, so much easier to get to.

Thanks bro

Will go out and take a look, just taking the filter off sounds so much easier than all the rest, will try 2 turns out and see where that puts me.

Something else for everyone to consider. Not just individual riding style (fast take offs , blipping at idle , never breaking the speed limit....trying to break the sound barrier , etc...)but WHERE you ride can really exaggerate your MPG #'s.

I'll explain. Around Atlanta traffic is horrible. Period. Stop , go , stop ,go......stop. Even a modest hand is going to burn more fuel. Stop and go traffic would yield me 38 or so miles per.

Now , get out of town on a good stretch of secondary roads (Ex., 278 runs from Atlanta to beyond Huntsville , Al.) with limited stopping and a moderate pace , and boom , I'm up to 50 MPG.....Carrying a passenger!

Leaving the Keys a couple years ago , from Key West back up to Key Largo , I got 50 MPG on the 'Liner. Insane! But the speed limit was 45-50 , and we didn't push it.

So my point is this , not only do we all ride different , but we are all riding in different areas. If you are only getting high 30's , but the bike is running good , don't try and compare what you are getting with Joe Blow half way across the country , riding in a different elevation , with different circumstances than you.

Now , if the bike seems to be running bad , that is a different story all together. In the ultimate quest for top MPG #'s , you can drive yourself nuts trying to get there. BB
