Starts but won't run 2 Years, 6 Months ago
My 06 Roadstar starts and runs for a few seconds but doesn't run smooth and if I try to give it any gas it dies. If I try to use even one notch on the choke it won't try to start. It still cranks over. Got gas, got the battery hooked up on a charger. It did this once before, wouldn't start for days. Put new plugs in it...didn't help. Had it hauled to the dealer, where it promptly started. Their best guess was I flooded it! I informed them that I have been starting this bike for 34,000 miles, I know how to start it. They offered nothing but charged me the same. Ideas? Oh yeah, and I'm not very experienced working on a bike.

Have you pulled the plugs to see how they look? That will be the sign of what is going on.

Yes. I changed the plugs. They were more grey than black. Changing them had no effect on what was going on (ie-the bike still didn't run)

Do you hear the fuel pump cycle on when you turn the key on? My guess is a cranky fuel pump.

Right now, I'm with Fireman, check to make sure your pump's working.

Fuel, fire and air. If you haven't changed anything, one of those three is missing. Start by check that it's getting fuel. If it is, then check for spark.

Ratl.

Any possibility of bad gas? Maybe water in the gas? I know with the crappy gasoline out there I have to run some cleaner thru every once in a while.

Re:Starts but won't run 2 Years, 6 Months ago
The fuel pump cycled for several clicks when I unsuccessfully tried to start it yesterday. This was after it not running all day. This made me realize how silent it had been. How do I check this? When the bike wouldn't run the last time (the time I took it to the dealer) I would eventually flood the bike as I tried to start it. I'm not flooding it this time around! So can it still get overloaded with gas with a bad fuel pump?

As for the gas, I gassed up my wife's 1100 V-Star at the same time I last filled up.

Have you ever changed your fuel filter. They can cause problems also. Just a thought.

Went out and turned key on, the fuel pump clicked once. I haven't changed the fuel filter. Is this located under the tank?

It's located above the fuel pump behind the plastic chrome cover behind the fuel petcock. and if you leave the fuel turned on the pump won't cycle but two or three times.
