Go pumpless! Everone that has swears by it. If not I'm sure that there are a few on here that still have a good pump laying around that they will never use again. Just ask.

If you want to you can run a hose from the petcock to the fuel inlet on the carb . Yep bypass the pump if it fires then you answered your question.
