Flip and Grind for 2 up, GOOD or BAD?????? 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I have stripped the rear fender way down and really want THAT LOW LOOK but also don't want to do something that is gonna keep my GF from being able to ride with me. So my question is if I do the flip and grind is it gonna cause me clearance/rubbing/bottoming out issues? With the two of us we will have about 350 pounds of butt on the bike? Just no way to afford the air ride right now so does my lowering dream have to wait till the money for the air-ride comes in or can I do the flip? Any and all input is appreciated as always, and thanks in advance!!

I would let you know if my brake line fittings ever come in. They are supposed to be here tomorrow so I will keep you posted. I will have about 370 pounds of butt in the seats so if we don't bottom out you should be fine.

You can get away with the flip if you don't hit any bumps.

I ride single mostly and did the flip with a 160 rear tire.

I bottom out on potholes and am afraid I will tear out the bracket. I try to avoid any hole or bump, but with the shadows on the road...forget it.

I don't want to crank up the spring pre-load any to give me the softest ride.

I may un-flip soon after I get my valves tuned and get time.

Yuck - don't tell me that! I wonder why. I have lowered Road Stars in the past (before I heard of the flip) and they sat just as low as mine sits now with no problems 2 up. The one I put the most miles on was a 2000 model and it was lowered with a whole new coil over assembly, I remember it was very expensive, and I put 15,000 miles on that bike after the lowering and never had a problem. I guess we will see.

You may have to run the heavy spring (Its made by Eibach I think?) to avoid bottoming out. There are guys on here who are doing it.

I wonder if a stiffer spring would help. Baron makes one that is rated at 930 pounds vs the stock which is rated ar 725 pounds.

i ride with the flip and grind, two up we are about 350ish...with progressive spring and completely preloaded it was ok, hit once in a while, grind here and there...it was completely undoable two up before i upgraded the spring though, even by myself i would bottom out occassionally at 175...

id say get the stiffest spring, i regret not getting the eibach one, my thoughts are i have the progressive shock, but since the relay arm is flipped, it stops you from getting the real benefit of having a stiff spring since you never get to the full 1200 lbs of the progressive spring...

so if you only ride two up, id say air ride...if you ride mostly solo, progressive, and if you ride kinda equal then stiffest spring you can find
