2004 California Smogged Roadie 2 Years, 6 Months ago
A few months ago I picked up this 04' Roadie. It was all stock. I did a Barons BAK, cobra 2 into 1 pipe, Iridium plug upgrade and a re-jet to specs found here on the forum. I also removed the AIS and the carbon canister to clear up some of the junk on the front of the engine. In that process I plugged the bottom port on the surge tank where the canister connected to it. I now had a bike that did not want to start and puked black smoke once it started. Once it started everything seemed good. I tried to fix the starting by carb tuning but nothing help starting. Once I unplugged the surge tank port where the canister had plugged in all the starting troubled cleared up. If you are removing smog stuff from a Ca. model (I mean if it falls off) I recommend leaving the surge tank so it can vent off. It sure helped me! Now I can just ride my bike and stop taking my carb. off. The Ca.model has some extra smog stuff that most instructions don't cover. LOL

You shouldn't have to leave the surge tank in. All of my AIS ...er fell off I vented the tank by drilling it out and putting a piece of foam in there. The hose to the back of the carb vents to the air.

Thanks for your input, you said you drilled the tank and put foam in it. You are saying the surge tank right. so what is connected to your surge tank now? Eric
