Route 66 2 Years, 6 Months ago
OK, I know it may be a little early to start planning next years rides but I've been thinking about this for awhile and with an extra weeks vacation next year I'm gonna do it.

The plan is to pick up Route 66 near Springfield MO. and take it all the way out to Santa Monica. Since we have people all over the country I thought I would see if there was any interest in others picking up on all or part of the ride.

I grew up in St. Louis when 66 was still the main drag going west and while I know 80% of it is gone there is still enough of the old mom & pop places out there that it should be fun. No time frame set, very early planning, just wondered if there was any interest from others.

Rode CA and AZ part in September. An absolute blast. We decided to stay out of LA and started in Victorville, CA and rode through to Holbrook, AZ. Loads of fun. Just make sure you leave lots of time for sidetrips. So much too see; too little time. Need to go back. My advice is don't over plan it though, just kind of let it happen.

I've traveled a great deal of historic route66 quite a few times. It's such a nice ride, and so tempting to 'borrow' one of the very many signs that line the side of the highway. If you shot for a june run, you'd quite enjoy yourself I'm sure, as there's plenty blooming, at least in the areas that I traveled.

I take 70 from Columbus, OH to St Louis, MO, where I pick up 44 and take it to Oklahoma City, OK, and there's a good portion of historic route 66 along there. It's an extremely plesant drive, 22 hours strait from Philadelphia, PA to Wichita Falls, TX. I leave around mightnight and get in around midnight, when stops are factored. It puts me right in the middle around mid day, and it's super nice and relaxing.

You might want to go to this site: http://www.historic66.com/

Lots of good info and a turn by turn map and desciption of every part of the highway.

When you get to Devore, CA at the bottom of the Cajon Pass on a piece of route 66 there is a great biker bar...the Screaming chicken built in one of the old gas stations on 66.

enjoy!

Too early to committ, but i'd like to do a 66 ride. I've ridden parts in okla and Tx. Lots of neat stuff. Rode a few miles of it yesterday north and east of Oklahoma City. Keep us informed.

If I had the time and money, it would be a dream come true. I would like to run it from end to end... maybe if those lottery numbers hit this week?? Take lots of pictures and video if you can and we will all be jealous.

Re:Route 66 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Glad to see so many others interested, told the wife I was gonna do it and she asked me why I waited so long!! I should be able to take about 10 days off, figure it will take me 6-7 to get there, a day of rest and an Iron Butt on the way home on the interstate, kill two birds with one stone. No setting any schedule on the way out as someone suggested, just enjoying the sites and the ride. I'll post a tentative schedule after the 1st of the year for anyone interested in a few days or hours of it. The CLINIC does Route 66, kinda like the pony express with a little less dust and much easier to clean up after the Roadie!!

That sounds like a blast for a trip - I've hit a little bit of 66 through OK and Missouri - wouldn't mine following along if I can get the time off! At least for part, if not all of the trip ...
