I too , got very good mileage on my Roadie. I'm a heavy weight , with a heavy wrist , and got 38-40 around town , 50 on road trips. On trips , had the tall shield , and bags loaded , and many times my rack loaded down with my Alice pack. I ran many of the same mods as Curt.

Danny , Could the fairing and the works on your bike be eating up the fuel. Do other Ultra Stars get what you typically get MPG wise? Also , don't count out the robbing power of Altitude. And last but not least , every-body's riding style is just a little different. BB

Ok Curt or anyone else out there.I will ride my bike to you and let you jet my bike. If you can get my bike to get 47-50 mpg. I will pay good money. I have had my bike set up on a dyno and I have never gotten over 40mpg. I don't ride hard. I intentionally try to ease into her in an attempt to get good mileage. I have my 2000 & 2002 midnight. Neither will get over 37mpg 99% of the time. And yes I check my mileage every tank full. I really question how some people check fuel mileage??

Most techs tend to tune for performance and not for economy. Did they use an AFR meter? What I have observed on my bike is a ratio of A/F for cruise (65mph) @ 14 yields 50mpg @ 13 I'm down to 40mpg. I got this on both the stock carb and the 42hsr. Seems 14 is the number where most are seeing the 50mpg. I've sen a number of dyna runs with AFR's for this. I used the AFR table from this site to set my carb to, I did use the leaner AFR from each of the ckts to still maintain good mpg's. http://www.daytona-sensors.com/tech_tuning.html There's no right or wrong in tuning the carb since there is a spread that you can work with that are with-in the limits of not being too rich or too lean.

My EFI '08 Silverado gets 40mpg around town and about 46-50 mpg on the road. Like bear says riding style will alter this some. I'm not real picky about gas mileage I just keep an eye on it in case there is a radical change all of a sudden.

I would doubt that it's the fairing. My 02 midnight has a windshield and it gets the same. As for altitude I live at 300' above sea level. Not much altitude! As for other ultra stars I really don't know. I know for me and how I ride that I'm not hammering the bike. I try and RIDE TO GET THE BEST POSSIBLE MILEAGE. That means I take off slow and slowly build speed. When I go up a hill I don't try and feed it more throttle to maintain my speed. I just let it go and if I slow a little so what I will pick the speed back up on the other side. So as you can see I'm trying my best. I just can't understand how guys can get 50mpg?
I would love to see that kind of mileage in fact I would love to see 45mpg.

I'm only averaging 35mpg on mine... but I'm 300lbs and most of the miles I am putting on the bike right now are to and from work which is only 2.8 miles away with 11 stops and I hammer it pretty good from each stop. I'm pretty happy with 35mpg right now but I expect a pretty big jump if I ever get in some normal hwy riding.

By the way...
BigBear... where did that rear fender rack come from? I'm looking for something similar.

Thanks for the input; It seems you all point me to verifying the jetting on the bike as it could be running rich; Are there any instructions in the forum which guide you through the process; I'd like to verify if the bike is still at factory settings or if the previous owner made adjustments.

Thanks again
