That usually means some unburned fuel getting caught in the hot exhaust from being jetted a little too rich. Do you know what your carb jetting is, PMS setting, etc.? How's your gas mileage?

I'll add you might also have an air leak somewhere. Have you done any mods with the manifold, pipes, that kind of thing?

That involves getting into your carb and looking. If you are up to it you have all the help (and tons of experience) you need here just for asking. The "tech articles" tab at the top has pages with most all of the info that you will need. If no one has been in the carb before then you will need to take the carb off of the bike to get the float bowl screws out and replaced.
The best advice that I can give you... READ, READ, READ the tech articles.

How many miles are on the bike? These bikes tend to do that for a while new until they get some miles on them and the engine loosens up. Is the bike totally stock, you have after market pipes, all that sort of thing?

If that is the case don't mess with it give a few more 1000 miles it will loosen up and quit that. Mine did it for long time. Sould be gone by 5000.

MS1700,why let clutch out just prior to motor making its last revolution ,to stop dieseling or to stop potential damage due to kickback when shutting down?

When you hear the motor doing that once in a while can it deamage the starter or somehting else that i hear making a funny kind of engaugement kind of sound with the R* motor as it makes it last partial kickback/backwords revolution before stopping?(PHEW/LOL!!!)

It's kind of a CHING sound for lack of better word to expalin it at 2:43 am here on the east coast/LOL!!!

Just wondering as i am not new to bikes at all after wrneching & riding them very yr for past 40yrs but i am fairly new to the yamaha 1700 v-twin series and am still not familure with all its little quirk's that it seems to have plenty of after hanging out here for a while now.

Thanks....Scott

Re:backfire 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Too high of an idle speed could cause kickback and or possible run on post shutodown on the R*.

Slightly higher idle speed can draw just enough additonal fuel into cyls & or ex as it's shutting down with ign off.

That can cuase a pop/bang when it hits any extreemly hot for example carbon heated red hot on valves/heads/pistons or in a hot ex too.

So maybe try lowering the idle speed a tad if it isnt at a low idle speed already,if that doesnt help try leaning the idle mixture a tad to see if that helps too so it cant draw as much fuel into motor when shutting down.
