Spit, sputter, cough. 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I wasn't too cold for me this morning, but the bike had other ideas of staying in the nice semi-warm garage. I pulled out the choke, put her in neutral, and turned it over....Spit, sputter, cough?

So I rode her to work (about 4 miles) 29 degrees out, but clear and sunny. Kept spitting and sputtering all the way to work, the choke position made no difference, there was little or no power. Scootergirl came to go to lunch with me, so we took the RS to the dealership, told them to FIX it. I have prepayed maintenance, so there is no extra cost. They said that the plugs should be changed at or around 8k miles (first time I've had tires outlast plugs ).

Anyhow, they are open late tonight, and I hope to get it back soon. I guess with the fresh oil change, new plugs and tune-up, I might just put her to bed for the winter....naaaaa!

in that temp and that short a trip, nothing is wrong. Granted, living in Fl I can ride all year, we had an unusually cold winter this past yr with morning temps in the upper 30's that lasted for a week at a time, normally it's 1 or 2 days Takes a good 10 miles for the engine to reach proper temps, and I needed to richen the pilot screw by about 1/3 turn. Gas does not atomize as well in cold temps, so increasing the flow in the pilot ckts, there is more gas that can atomize. It's a carb, it can't adjust gas for cold temps like fuel injection. For me, in the cold morns, I usually keep the choke on for 3 to 5 miles, then I'll feather the throttle to keep the rpms up till fully warmed, in warmer temps a mile or 2 with choke, and feather the throttle if needed.

Man, that ain't right. My 99 R* doesnt even winch at the cold. I have been riding to work every day and even down in the 20's it purrs like a well massaged cat. I have more problems with the cold than the bike (Finger tips mostly). Anyway hope they get it worked out for you. I just changed out my plugs at 16,000 miles just because I purchased a set of NGK Irridiums and wanted to give them a try. I have a friend rider with a 99 R* with a lot of miles and hasen't changed his plugs yet. I think the plug thing is wayout of wack but I guess it depends on what's been done to the bike etc.

Nothing back from the dealer yet Still no idea of if it was a fouled out plug or something else? I just called them, it's next in line to be worked on, I guess all the snowmobiles came first

I'm pretty sure it was self induced. I had to start the bike up the other day and move it from my garage to my next door neighbors garage, and then I shut it down without warming it up, and then I did it again in the opposite direction the next day, again not warming it up. So I think I know who to blame

Yep, got the bike back, I fowled out all but one plug. Self induced as I thought

Now how about this, the dealership did an 8000 mile tune up for me and changed the plugs plus they used Synthetic Oil (my request) and it cost me $0. I thought they would at least charge me for the upgrade from dyno to synthetic, but nope, not a penny. Did I mention that this dealership is really good?

I take my bike there, so does Greyphart and Silverfox, never a bad word about these guys!

That's the best price for a tune up and oil change I have heard of in a long time.

That's one helluva dealer! Mine was going to charge me to switch out my battery (that I bought from him BTW ). I couldn't believe it! i just strapped the new battery (in box) on my rack & brought it home. Too bad dealers like yours are so few and far between.
