How to modify stock air box 2 Years, 6 Months ago
I am going to break down and install a K&N air filter in the stock air box of my '01 RS/Midnight.
Some reading in the Jetting side made reference to a "Poorman's BAK", but the link is now defunct.
Can anyone describe the modifications to the stock air box (pictures worth a thousand words!)needed to get good airflow? I can't do a real BAK kit now, but the stock airbox is fine and looks alright.
I am also going to install a Dynojet jet kit after. Thanks!

Inelson, just requires drilling a few holes in the black part of the box.

Pictures too big, will try again in a few minutes

Well, you have the 'Poorman's BAK" that is simply drilling holes (3/4 " - 1" ) in the airbox base... and then you have "BigBoy's BAK" which is where I took my Dremel and cut off the lower half of the base except for the lower mount. That way there is NO restriction from the airbox and the top is still covered.

Or, for about the same bucks, get a K&N universal filter like Mr. C's, fab up a bracket, it will look awesome with the hooker drag pipes..

That's what I WOULD have done if my bike had not had the billet V102 cover when I bought it. I like that cover! (and hate the factory cover)

it's not too late, about 50 bucks and a little time, and your there..A lot of good looking air boxes out there, but if you want to see the jugs, you have to keep the accessories small , His hooker pipes hide a little more than I like, but with a small airbox, it will balance out real nice...Just MHO............

Be advised that drilling holes in the stock airbox requires jetting changes now, not later. I had my stock airbox off and apart last night and decided to try a little opening up. I bored a 1 3/8" hole in the bottom front portion of the airbox, Ramair effect, My R* did not like that at all. It was great on top end revs but getting it there was a fight with the throttle. Definite jetting required. I taped over the hole I made and all is normal for now. In a couple of weeks when the snow flies and the bike goes up on the jack for the winter, the carb's comming off for rejet and other things as well as the rest of the bike getting attention for various stages of maintanance and mods.

Thanks for the replies.
I already have the jet kit ready to go.
Besides the back of the box, can you go the outer diameter (sides) of the black plastic housing? Or, is the rear all that is needed? Are many smaller holes better, or a few larger?
