Metzeler Tires 2 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
My Dunlop 404s are wearing out at a rapid pace (8500 miles) at 38 psi and that is just too damn soon! My past experience with Metzelers on other bikes has been great as well as they seem to last a helluva lot longer. What is your experience with them and what is the largest one that will fit on the back of a stock '02?

A lot of the guys here love the Metzler M880's. I don't think that I have ever heard a complaint on them here. (Over at the Venture forum they hate them. A lot of guys have had chunks come out of them even though inflation was kept up. Must be the extra weight.)
Myself and some others like the Avon Venoms. Either tire would be a good choice.
Personally, on the next tire change, I'll be going to a rear car tire and a rear tire on front in reverse.

Oh, and a 160 is about it on width for the rear.

My stock tires have almost 9K on them and are holding up really good. I also run Nitrogen and Dyna-beads in them, so I think that might be helping them last longer.
When it wears out, I will switch to the darkside and run the car tire also.

On going DS, will a bike shop mount and balance them for you? Also, what make and size DS tire is the best for the back?

If you go to Delphi forum Riding the dark side they have a list of installers and all the info you want. I run a comtrac 175/75/16. I ran Metzlers and they were okay compared to the darkside. If you have spoked rims you will need to run the bike tube not the car tube. As far as balancing you can use the dyna beads or equal weigh it and put in a pouch lightly taped so that it will brake when you go down the road.
I suggest reading up on it at the site. All the info is there. IMHO Gobbs of traction comparatively speaking

I've got the ME880's and they have got about 10,000 miles on them. So far I'd say excellent, I'm expecting to change them out next year sometime, but I still have lots of tread left.
When I change them, I'm getting more of the same, except maybe go with the Wide White Wall.

Did you stay with a White wall on the front? I know most people never even notice if the back is WW or BW, but the front sort of sticks out there. What brand/size tire did you use on the front? Same as MS1700?

I just went with Metzlers and all I can say is NICE. I had the origonal dunlops on the bike (99)when I purchased it back in May. I didn't Know any better since this was my first Big Bike. I took it in for the trans recall and had the new Metzleres installed while the bike was in the shop and my tires were almost bald. I couldn't belive the difference in handeling. Cracks in the road are non existent (the bike used to follow every little nook and crack in the road and heaven help you if you came across a section of road that was ground up for new blacktop). Very nice tires. Bike handels like a dream.
