Whats wrong with stock exhaust 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Hi:
The more I aquaint myself with the R* the more I find that folks are changing there pipes to Cobra or V&H.

As a newbie to R*, I wonder if there is really something wrong with the stock exhaust.

My R* came with Cobra pipes and also a spare set of stock pipes.

Thanks and best regards.

The reason I changed mine is for sound. I think I may be correct in saying that that is the main reason that most of the others changes theirs and also maybe for better performance. Your stock exhaust is just not gonna have that nice tone without doing some modifying, such as the stage 3.

Agree aftermarket exhaust for the sound primarily here as well.

Stuck with stock and went Stage 3. A guy told me that they sound as good if not better than aftermarket pipes. I like the look of the stock pipes with the saddlebags instead of worrying about lowering the bags.

I wanted the stockers gone for all the usual reasons (sound, power, look) but also for another one every one forgets....weight. Stock exhaust is unbelievably heavy. Any time you can whack 10-20 pounds off of your bike you have a better, faster ride. In particular when it comes to exhaust I wanted something that emphasized the "V" of the engine and the V&H ProPipe does that.

Can You hear me NOW??

Not only does the aftermarket exhaust let drivers sealed up in their cars hear you, but it is also a warning to roadside animals.

Just learned a real valueable lesson going through Texas between Van Horn Texas, up to Waco. There are deer everywhere. I was following a couple Goldwings in late afternoon, and I was a good quarter mile behind them. There were 3-4 deer grazing on the side of the road. Goldwings zipped right by like a car, and the deer never lifter an ear. When I got about 200 yards from them, they heard my pipes, picked up their heads, turned, and bounced over the fence, back into the pasture.

Of course I was slowing down, and letting the thunder roll. Better than having a deer in my lap.

There is nothing wrong with stock pipes. Personally I think they are some of the best sounding pipes around, once the back plate and pipe are pulled out. Many of us like to personalize our bikes almost as much as we like riding them. I wanted a certain look, and the stock pipes would not allow me to lower the bags, so I went aftermarket. More performance? Maybe 1 or 2 HP, I don't know and I really don't use every pony this thing has anyway.

I think it all boils down to the fact that many of us just can't leave these things alone!!!

Be careful or your catch the fever too, and there isn't a vaccination for it.

My reasons were the same as everyone else's for sound but I replaced mine for 1 more reason. I wanted the rear pipe to sit lower so I could put larger saddle bags on. Your limited on saddle bag size with the stock rear pipe!!!!! Also the motor breathes better with aftermarket exhaust.

I drilled mine out for stage 1 to get "The sound" and it does sound good, not too loud, but Like Danny, I will change over to duals so I can put on larger saddle bags.
