Ape Hanger Ride 2 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
Well thanks to Danny and Brice, I have my 16" apes on and damn, what a look on my roadie. I'll put a full youtube video up this way everyone can see and appreciate the details on my bike. Now, here is my issue, I took my first ride last night and feel a vibration in the bars when riding. The shop said thsi is because the bike has rubber mounts. As mentioned I have the 16" apes and using the stock risers. Is this feeling the norm or do you feel there is something possibly not done write. Even though the bars don't move, they do flex and I thought this was abnormal. Can you guys give me your comments on this, if this flex feeling is the norm them I'll feel much beter and adjust to it. Also, Cornering was strange with counter steering

Without riding it it's hard to tell, but I'd say it's physics at work. Your stock bars had a nice hand massager, but like a tree, it sways more at the top than at the base.

Mike what your feeling I believe is normal. One question though. Were the rubber dampners still in the triple trees before these bars were installed? If the risers are bolted directly to the triple tree without the rubber then it stands to reason you will feel it more.
Those are tall bars. And yes steering is completely different then what your used to.
By the way did you ship out the cables????

Mike:
Great job! Welcome to the club. You'll get used to the steering...
Physics is true. But, what I think you're going to find with the rubber bushings is a little more movement where they mount. Replacement bushings can be found at Baron's. Yamaha doesn't sell them. They may just be worn. Also, since the bars are longer than stock, they will flex a bit. But, only under heavy conditions. You wouldn't feel it while simply riding.
And, you can change out the risers to something like what I did (shown below). They mount solid against the tree and don't ride on a rubber bushing (the raked trees don't actually have them). They're rock solid w/ no vibration or movement down there.

You may also want to make sure that there is a washer on top of the rubber bushings. If the risers don't have that to seat against, they'll wiggle like crazy...
Shoot us a photo when you get one. I'm sure we'd all like to see your results.

if you are talkin about the flex in the risers then yea it is normal...the rubber bushings have a lot of give to dampen the vibrations...you can get them out but you will need a press of some sort...someone on here actually had a smart idea that used a socket bigger than the bushing and a bolt, as they tightened it it pushed the bushing out into the socket, i was thinking of going this route over the winter since i dont really like the flex in the risers much either, the replacement bushings are metal so will give a much more sure feeling in the steering...glad you like the apes, its the only way to ride
EDIT: damnit...i hate when i type to slow and someone posts what i am trying to say!!! haha what are those risers rich? i may have to look into those if they arent to heavy on the wallet

SS:
The cost of the risers was about $60.00 for the pair. Mine are 2", but here's a link to some 4" on Ebay.

I have everything packed up and was waiting on the new brake line to come in which arrived this morning at the dealership. Your package will be in transit tomorrow unfortunately the yamaha dealership was a little slower on getting more order in.

Yep. They might even be a hair shorter. But, who actually measures...

It sounds like the soloution is to try the Barrons bushings or change out the risers. The flex is not that bad, but noticable and when it comes to steering that is something to notice Riding at 55mph I wondered if the bike would be stable at my regular highway cruise speed which is about 85 on most days on my way to New York. So if i'm correct the flex is solely from the rubber mounts in the tripple trees and if I want to reduce the vibration simply go with another type of riser as displayed in the other picture.
Don't worry Brice, you're money order is already in the mail ;o) I will say this much, it was my first ride out and picture this. A 6'6" muscular black guy weighing an easy 290 on the roadie with 16s rolling down a dark street only to be lite by the incredible blue lights I have on teh bike I swear, before I had done a full 5 miles, I received several hell yeahs and the look of envy from the none biker dudes in the car with their chic. Ahhhhhh..I finally understand this ape thing. Clinic members thank you for opening up my world, I actually feel sexy on the bike..lmfao...look out for the full video tonight.
