Has anyone tried to hook up the Mikuni fuel pump the way it was designed? It's designed to work on the alternating vacuum/pressure pulse provided by the crankcase vent. At a rated output of 14 liters/hr or 3.6 gallons it should be more than enough for the Road Star yet I've read some posts where the owner had to install the larger pump to get enough fuel.
It probably works ok when hooked to the intake manifold as long as it's receiving a pulsing signal but I suspect that at a steady vacuum the diaphragm might not move much at all.

If the pump is hooked up to the crankcase vent, how do you vent the case?

I'm with you paul. What I'm wondering is why would anyone want to add another fuel pump option rather then eliminate something that can go wrong?

I have one of those bikes that won't run right without the pump. It'll be 11 years old in May and I'm ready to do something so I don't have to worry about the original fuel pump failing in the middle of nowhere.

I had considered the vacuum pump too but so far just keep the stock electric in place and keep a length of fuel line and some clamps under the seat just in case the pump dies on the road. We know that the bike will run fine under normal er, let me refrase that to legal driving conditions on gravity feed alone.
