I have the red jack as well and almost use the same procedure as scottw, except I block under the kick stand and can then place the jack where I want it. My R* is a 2009. So don't give up that good jack, it is still useable.

I bought a Sears red jack and wound up exchanging it 3 times before I got one that worked properly. Everyone of them was different in clearances and welds. The slot that the ram pin fits into were different on all of them as well. Some slots were cut deeper than others. If they are not cut deep enough, the jack will not go all the way down. I work mine by standing on the right side of the bike and simply pulling it up off the kickstand by the throttle grip. I then just hold it up level and slide the jack under it. easy to do really. It will not slide in all the way if it is on the stand. The bike has to be off the kickstand and standing upright to get the red jack under all the way.

I do the same with the yellow Sears jack, which I absolutely love.

I was at a conference in Rancho Mirage (just outside Palm Springs) a couple of years ago and took quick jaunts up into the desert mountains nearby. Check out Google maps of Rancho Mirage or Desert Palm and zoom in on Highway 74. Beautiful up there!
