Fuel pump removal (opinions) 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Thinking of removing the fuel pump, but I wanted opinions of Roadie owners that have done the different mods. The suzuki float change seems to be the same for all mods, so I don't think that will be an issue (thanks to whom ever discovered that). I know this is a lot of questions, but I want to make sure this is the right mod for me. 1) Which is better? With or without vacuum pump? 2) Do you have to vent the gas cap or can you just remove the rollover valve? 3) Any Fuel starve issues? 4) Any MPG's issues? 5) Will this improve my "cold engine idles good, hot engine idles high, situation? 6) Any acceleration issues with a low fuel level? 7) If I didn't use the vacuum pump, should I still use 1/4 tubing, or the larger size? 8) Have you had any "fuel vaporization" issues on hot start? If so, what did you do to cure that? 9) If using a vacuum pump and upon removing the carb screen, would you recommend a high flow filter before and after the pump? 10? Did your warm up times increase or decrease? 11) Are there any other pro/cons I'm missing? Your opinions on this subject are much appreciated, so thank you in advance. Regards. Mike

Running the Suzuki float valve w/ the line under the manifold for better (IMO) gravity feed. Carb screen gone - replaced w/ in-line filter. Gas cap vented. No fuel starvation issues. MPG about the same (heavy wrist) . Idle not an issue. Not really an extensive revamp compared to others. Does clean up the left side of the engine pretty good though.

All those questions he sounds a little apprehensive huh? Like I was, Whole time dealer was working diligently on it for free, besides all my time and gas running up there. Trust us, there's nothing to it. Jump! Jump!

Mine is stage two exhaust,
The K&N And some spacers and screws
Benn Herr Manifold,
Special longer intake by MC.
Rollover removed, No Gas cap Vent, Runs To reserve and beyond.
No Pump at all, In fact no filter! 5/16th line right to carb.
I used the Same spring from fuel line on fuel line.
Barrens Jet 172.5 4th clip from blunt, metal washer under clip. PMS 2 turns out.
While you install the float valve just get the new bowl bolts listed in the how to.
Better MPG that's a no brain-er you won't be dumping fuel all over every stop.
Idle is the same, but it heats up way less so less of a problem.
Warm up is less for me.
I do starve for fuel two up fully loaded and drag racing up hill over 90. Other than that, no

Each bike has a personality, so not everything can be the same, you just do it and work from there.

Thanks ms1700. I suppose if the no vacuum pump doesn't fit my bikes personality, I could always install one later. And thats a good note: Drag race down hill only. 2 turns doesn't run too lean?

Re:Fuel pump removal (opinions) 2 Years, 9 Months ago
All due respect to the Pumpless amongs us......... I reinstalled mine , like the look of the bit of Chrome on the left side personally , but that was not the reason .
I drilled out the vent and installed the Suzuki Needle valve , but I found the Bike ran fine on the top of the tank , yet noticably lean on the lower 1/3 . And I discoverd why ... when I checked the float level with the Fuel pump installed and turned on , the Level in the bowl was actually higher by a couple of mm than pumpless . The( mine anyway ) Bike just runs more consistenly and cooler with the pump installed and I never get the dreaded Carb Puking . Kury high 5 Air System , ported , stock Idle Jet , 175 main(Mikuni ) jet , Kury Needle on First clip from blunt end . pms out 2.5 turns . Cobra 2 into 1 exhaust , AIS removed . Running great , good mileadge , good Idle . ( Slow when bike Cold , faster after good warm up )
For what its worth .
