Help with a jetting problem? 3 Years, 5 Months ago
I am new to this forum, so "hello" to all.
I just bought a 2005 Midnight Silverado. I'm used to riding a 2001 R1, so this is all new territory for me.
Anyway, my problem is this:
I installed V&H powershots exhaust, and the bike ran just fine. Well, not being one to leave well enough alone, I bought a hypercharger, and a DJ jet kit. The DJ jet kit called for a #200 main, and the bike is running real rough. I have been reading on here that most people seem to be running a #175 main. I was thinking I would drop back to the #195 main, but should I go even lower? Should I try the #190 and work my way up/down from there?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Welcome and hope you enjoy the bike.

There are different jet manufacturers, mainly Mikuni and DJ. Go the tech tips to see the relationship between the two.

I'm running a Mikuni 170 main which is about a 180 DJ. You are correct the 200 DJ is bit too rich so yes .... drop down to the 190 (leaving everything else alone) and see how it runs.

Where do you have the clip on the needle?

Hi Doc, thanks for the reply.
I have the needle set at #4. This seems to be consistent with what I have read from other members here. I'm going to change the main this morning, so I'll let you know how that worked this evening.
Again, thanks for the help!

OK, I have the main at 190, and the needle on #3. This seems to have cleared up the major sputtering for the most part. However, I still have a slight sputter in the 30-40mph range.
Any suggestions?

"sputter" ?

In the last post you were on #4 and were going to change the main. Did you change both the main and the needle? It's best to do only one change at a time.

I would suggest you do the WOT test to see where it's at. Gram has written an excellent article at http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/94/96/

If it's getting better perhaps you need to go a bit leaner. Do you have a 185 to try?

I changed the main first, but it seemed to have little effect, so then I tried changing the needle position. It's running much better, except for the slight sputter when you're trying to maintian a speed between 30-40mph. I checked the plugs, and they're quite black so I fighured this means it's too rich.
I do have a 185 main (actually I have mains all the way down to 165). WHen I was checking the DJ/M conversion chart I saw that the main I am using is smaller than stock. Is this right? I'm amazed that I'm using a hypercharger, and a smaller main and the bike is running rich. I would have thought the increase in air flow would have made it tend to be more lean.
I'll try the #185 today and see what effect it has. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Again.
I changed the main first, but it seemed to have little effect, so then I tried changing the needle position. The bike runs much better now, but it still has a slight sputter in the 30-40mph when you're trying to maintain that speed range. I pulled a couple of plugs and they are quite black, as is the exhaust. I thought that the hypercharger would make the bike run lean because of the increased air flow, but even with a smaller main than stock (according to the conversion chart)it appears to be rich.
At any rate, I guess I will try the #185 today and see what happens.
Thanks again for your help.

If you originally changed the main only from 200 to 190 and it made no difference but then when you went from the 4th to 3rd it got bette then it sounds like you're still a bit rich.

I would try the 185 and the 4th clip. You may be close at that setting and just need to adjust the PMS to dial it in.

You are correct the hypercharger will require a richer setting than stock but I believe most guys are running way to rich.
