#219817 fern5407 (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 45 Gas guage 3 Years, 9 Months ago   Is it me or is the gas guage on the roadies (mine is an '03) innacurate or slow in registering the actual gas level of the tank? AND yes there is a fix for it.....DON'T LOOK AT IT FOR AN HOUR AFTER YOU FILL IT UP. Therefore by the time you look down the guage won't indicate full as it has been consuming gas. Based on the fact that it is never really indicative of the feul level what was the point of putting this thing on it? I removed it from the tank, cleaned up the contacts, bent the contact arms tighter and it works again...well, it only shows 2/3 tank when full. I'd rather have that then it bouncing around as gas sloshed in the tank. I just fired the bike up after getting everything put back together (the holidays have kept me busy). I filled the tank up this morning (obviously when I painted it it was completely drained) and now my gas guage isn't registering. It is plugged in and does the sweep when you first turn the key on, but doesn't show any gas. The low gas light also blinked a few times. I only let it run for about 5 minutes, just long enough to warm up and to make sure there weren't any leaks. So I guess I need to let it run for a little longer to register. I remember my past R* were slow to register, but didn't remember it taking this long. I was getting ready to post a new thread and figured I would search it first. Sure enough found my answer! Gas guage started working and seemed to be about right on the level, but the gas light kept blinking 8 times then it would pause, 8 times - pause, etc. I never rode this bike enough before tearing it down to realize if it was doing that before the paint job. Oh well, if it keeps doing it I guess I will order a sending unit. The electronics determine the level of fuel in the tank by sensing the "high/low" level for the first minute or so (as the gas sloshes around inside) before it gives you a solid reading. Gold Boarder Posts: 606 Re:Gas guage 3 Years, 4 Months ago   Actually it doesn't matter how full it is, it matters how empty it is. No one ever ran out of gas full. You could always turn the calender back 30 years and just ride until it ran out of gas then turn the reserve on and drive to the gas station.
