Wiring Barons Bullet Tachometer??? 2 Years, 4 Months ago
I thought this would be very straight forward and for the most part it is. I need a little help as the tach I have has 4 wires, Green negative, Black ground, Red positive and Yellow ??? The instructions that came with the tach reference a Green, Red, Black and Blue wire. The instructions I downloaded reference Green, Black, Red, White. I am assuming the yellow wire is probably for the light, but sure would hate to hook this baby up and short it out. Can someone that has hooked up one of these Barons tachs please advise.

Sorry Cruiserbob. I had the dealer install. From experience, I told them not to install on the coils (too much pulsing). They found a switched power source and it works great. Not much help I know. You'll get your answer soon...

I hooked one of these up a couple of months ago. When I get home tonight I'll look it over and update the wiring info before the game. I hooked mine to my coils since I was upgrading them as well at the same time.

I spoke with Barons Tech Support today. It seems that there are tachs with incandescent lights and they have a green-black-red-blue wire and the tach I have with the single LED light is green-black-red-yellow. The Red and yellow go together on the positive terminal. If you have a blue wire the red and blue go together on the positive terminal. That is what I figured, but did not want to fry anything to find out. Seems like maybe Barons needs to update the install instructions as they have at least 2 versions out of date.
I will hook it up tonight and hopefully that will be that.
Then I need to go battery shopping. It came up to about 12.7 volts, but won't charge up all the way. Got a little over 3 years out of it.

Crusierbob,if you end up needing a new battery here's a file i compiled that has mostLY higher CCA batteries in case you want to upgrade from the stock 270cca to a higher cca battery for moRE starting power/amps.

IT would also be a good time to upgrade to the larger diameter higher capacity battery cable kit Maxair sells too.

==============================================================================================

AGM=Absorbent GLASS MAT

Hers the scoop on them:

New AGM SERIES batteries incorporate the latest in valve regulated battery technology. Absorbent Glass Mat separators hold the acid like a sponge virtually eliminating battery gassing or leaking eve if the battery case is broken! This battery requires no maintenance... ever! Corroded battery cables and acid mess are a thing of the past. Due to the small volume of acid used in valve regulated technology, the battery actually operates under a small amount of positive pressure to keep outside air from drying out the AGM separators. The caps are NOT removable and actually have a small pressure relief valve designed into them to keep the battery at proper operating pressure throughout its life.

Valve regulated batteries operate within the same voltage ranges as regular wet batteries and can be charged with a conventional charger. We recommend the use of a fully automatic charger to eliminate the possibility of overcharge and the premature drying out of the AGM separators. The shelf life of a valve regulated battery is also similar to a standard wet battery, and we recommend that you use a battery maintainer when storing your vehicle for more than 90 days.

It read 12.7vdc, bike off when I took it off the charger. Last night it read 12.53vdc bike off. I have been having starting problems lately and believe the battery is getting tired. Decompression selenoid checks out and has been cleaned and lubed. I had the battery charger on for 12 hours trickle charging and battery did not reach a full charge. Bike started well, but I believe the battery is not taking and holding a charge and will leave me some where if I do not replace it soon.
