AutoZone Duralast Battery 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Anyone know the CCA's of the Duralast CTX20L-BS (also listed by them as GTX20L-BS)? Any opinions on this battery?

Also, what are the CCA's of Walmart's (ES) battery?

Thanks. ..dl..

Hi Nosami, have a question for you.

Didnt you just post on having starter issues with you hi comp setup?

If that was you didnt you mentione getting a real hi CCA battery like 500-550 CCA for your R*?

If yes :

* Who's the battery mfg?

* Where did you get it?

* Whats the cost?

* And you you happen to know the CCA of the stock repl batteyr for the 1700 R*?

I think my used 06 170 has a faurly new deka maint free batt in it listed as eihter 225or 250CCA.

I have read more then a few complaints here about even some stock R* having hot start issues esp when a few stops & starts are made in hot weather.

so i am thnking of being pro active here and already ordered the larger battery calbe and higher amp starter relay both listed here in RSC as good upgrades to the starting system.

I am also going to instal a new fresh as high as i can find CCA batter that willfit the stock battery case .

i figure short of intsalling the oh so procey higher trq warrior starter thats my best defence againt having any hot start issues with my newly aquired R* this comming summer season.

Now i have to decied weather or not to do the mods that supposedly stop the fuel spitting issues when these bikes are hot or take the chance and try simply shutting off the fuel a me or so before stoppig the bike t use upmost of the fuel in the bowl & fuel line & filer so there no fuel to boile out to cause the issue.

As a precausion i may just install a toggle switch that's easily accessable while driving just in case the bike starts spewing out fuel sometime on a hot day esp if it's running and hasn't flooded out yet like while in traffic . That's so i can stop the elec fuel pump from flooding over fuel from the carb ont othe hot pipes when what ever is going on at that time is happening without having to trun the bike/motor off if its still running and i need some power for a few more seconds to get it off the road with the wife and myself on it.

I know myself or the wife would not really like riding on a bike that can randomly spew fuel out of carb side of bike potentially onto hot pipes, thats not a good senario at all IMHO,why the heck hasn't yamaha addressed this potential safety issue? (Yes i know 08 and up R*'s have EFI.)

Thanks a lot..Scott

my battery gave out on a trip to vegas back in March. Got the replacement from Walmart. It was cheaper than OEM, but I had to put the acid in myself (which I've never done before). They had put too much acid in and it spilled over. When I put the lid back on the battery, it shot acid at a friend of mine. I did not like that (nor did my friend). With that said, the battery is performing well.

I have one problem with Autozone's motorcycle battery. I purchased one a few years back and had a problem with it at just over 90 days. Well Autozone says "sorry but the warranty is 90days" So I went to a battery store to purchase a battery with a better warranty, at least the one I have now comes with a 1 year warranty. And out here in this desert heat it don't take long to kill a battery.

Thanks nasomi. I got one that worked the first day but did not work after. I bought it because I was stranded with a dead battery. Not sure if there is a starter relay issue/drain or if the new battery did not initialize properly as the instructions were sketchy. I got a replacement today. If the Duralast is indeed 300CCA I'll give it another shot.

Good point. 90 days is no time. A longer warranty is likely a much better choice for a battery.

Re:AutoZone Duralast Battery 2 Years, 6 Months ago
FOR YTX20L-BS WHICH I BELIEVE MANY OF OUR OUR R*'S USE HERE ARE SOME NICE REPLACMENET MAINT FREE BATTERIES THAT HAVE MORE CCA THEN THE STOCK 270CCA BUT ARE LESS EXPESIVE THEN THE REAL HOT 545 5 SECOND AMP PULSE/185CCA ODYSSEY BATTERY THAT'S AVAIL TOO THAT RECENTLY BEEN TALKED ABOUT HERE IN RSC.

AGAIN,REMEMBER,STOCK BATTERY APPLICATION IS 270 CCA SO THESE BATTERIES ARE NICE LITTLE UPGRADE CCA WISE ACCEPT FOR THE ODYSSEY WITH A 545 5 SEC AMP PULSE THAT LOOKS TO KICK BUTT FOR 5 SECONDS BUT THEN GOES BACK TO ITS RATED 185CCA SOON AFTER THAT. IT COSTS APPROX 40% MORE AND MAY NOT FIT ALL R*'S EITHER SO SEE THE GMAM INDUSTIRES SITE FOR APPLICATION DETAILS.

I LISTED THE LINKS BELOW FOR ALL BUT ONE BATTERY SO YOU CAN SEE THEM,#2 IS MY CHOICE DUE TO PRICE & 2YR WARRAMTY & #5 2ND CHOICE AS LONG AS IT HAS AT LEAST 1YR WARRANTY FROM MFG-YUASA WHICH I THINK IT DOES BUT WOULD CONFIRM WITH SELLER PRIOR TO BUYING. IF NOT GOOD WARRANTY ON #5 THEN O WOULD CHOOSE #3 WITH 1 YR WARRANTY FOR 2ND CHOICE.

HERE GOES:

1) 320CCA GEL $70 INC S&H 6 MONTH WARRANTY

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190348761730&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

2) 320CCA $95 IN S&H GEL MAINT FREE BATTERY 2 YR FREE REPL

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130340243958&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT[/color]
3) 310CCA GEL FOR $85 IN S%h 12 MONTH WARRANTY FREE REPL

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180390943105&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

4) 545AMP PULSE FOR 5 SECONDS/BUT ONLY 185CCA $137.50 Odyssey PC545 2 YR WARRANTY ,SEE "GMAN INDUSTIRES" WEB SITE FOR DETAILS AND APPLICATION FOR YOU BIKE

ALSO CAN BE SEEN HERE @ SUMMIT RACING:

5) YUASA 320CCA $108 INC S&H HI PERF MAINT FREE SHOULD BE 1YR WARRANTY FROM MFG BUT DOESNT STATE THAT

Re:AutoZone Duralast Battery 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Thanks Scottw and everyone.

I ended up returning the AutoZone Duralast. Turns out it was just 270 CCA's. I had to do a lot of searching online to find this out. I called 3 AutoZones and none of them knew the CCA's of the Duralast (one claimed it was 400!). Scott's post confirms the 270 CCAs. 270 is way too low for my setup with HC pistons and stock wires (new wires are on my list along with a new starter if needed).

I drove down the street and bought the Permaseal AGM heavy duty with 310 CCA's from Batteries Plus. My R* started after about 4 or 5 hard cranks. The Duralast was long flat by the 3rd crank brand new and off the tender.

Wires and/or a starter are on the winter list.
