My experience is, Most HD owners look down on us and we don't look up to them. Lots of exceptions yes, but for the most part they are living a dream and if it's not your dream then your Rice trash. I can't point to but one or two people I know that have only ridden a HD all their life, and none who started out before 10 riding one.
They look down on us because we don't buy American, and, I always think gee, if that was the deal you should be on a Victory. And we all know why I think that.
At about 12 to 16 Degrees Schatzie and I suited up and rode on down to the Harley dealer who registered us for a $1000 shopping spree in the store and ordered us 2 Free T shirts. They said that over 600 people in Ohio Rode in this month to qualify. Go Ohio! And, they give the T shirt to anyone who rides in, Rice Burner or not.

Here we are, They take your pic when you ride in with your bike and post it to the Internet on their site at the end of the Drawing, all the pics. Now that's a Harley Davidson dealer!
But t
last 365 days we got a lot more free stuff from our Yamaha dealer!

Was reading the posts in this thread and thought some of you younger guys might like an old fudds view point on this subject. I have a HD Nightster just fell in love with it because it reminded me of my younger days( I'm 63) and it is a very quick 1200CC machine. In 1968 I road a BSA Thunderbolt,In 1974 a Honda 750, and in 1980 through 1983 a Harley Sportster and a Fatbob 83 CID. I bought a new Roadstar Silverado in 2008 and as far as cruisers go it as good or better than anything I've ridden. I like em all and don't give a rip what anyone thinks of my wheels, but if someone is riding a good looking machine I will complement them in a new york minute, just seems like the friendly thing to do. Actually lately I have been restoring a 1977 BMW 1000cc boxer R100R and as such have come in contact with some BMW owners. Now if you want to talk about elitist the BMW owners view all of us who ride any V twin as fad seeking saturdaynight bar hoppers on outdated machinary. They see the BMW as the epitome of machinary and they race and are in a since motorcycle snobs and the only real motorcycle riders that exist. Like I said I like em all and find something unique in every bike I see. The Roadstar clinic is by far the most interesting one that I belong to.

Identifying with a brand or a team, etc, is a means by which many establish personal uniqueness, and paradoxically, becoming homogenous with all those who share their attempt. In more simplistic terms, it is nothing more than using something outside one’s self to augment one’s self image. This too is paradoxical, in as much as self image, is little more than how some individuals think, or more accurately, wish, others should be thinking of them. For example, “I ride X-brand motorcycle; therefore I’m special, unique, and desirable.” Of course, in order for this logic stand it must also attempt to denigrate other brands or teams, etc. Bottom line, they are saying, I’m better than you are based upon what I ride, not who I am. You see this in advertizing, politics, and religion. Of course, we all do this to a certain degree; some are aware that they do it and in that awareness become humble and attempt to mitigate the more harmful aspects of their behavior. Me, I'm just glad I can ride...not withstanding the rueful grin when a hot chick says to me at a stop light, "Nice motorcycle."

Reading the post's on this subject has caused me to reminisce. Four brothers and one of my sisters have all been motorcycle nuts as far back as I can remember. There have been multiple bikes in our lives and we have loved them all. Royal Enfield (my older brothers, don't remember what model) 1966 Norton 750 Atlas, 1971 Norton 750 Combat, (damn sure regret selling that one) 1966,1968 & 1971 Honda 450, 1976 & 1982, Honda 750, 1978 & 1987 Gold Wing, Kawasaki KZ 1300 (can't remember what year that one was). The years went by, raising families, I rented Harley's over the last 5 yr. or so (Christmas gifts from my wonderful wife) Last year my younger brother was considering buying the Honda VTX, but his buddies said "you won't be happy, it's not a Harley" so he bought a 2007 Road King for $17,500. Two weeks ago I bought ( after spending probably 2,000 + on rentals) my 2008 RS $7,000 and my brothers response was that is probably what I should have done, "I still owe over $14,000 on my Road King" Bottom line, we don't care what you ride or what we ride, we like to ride. Must confess the RS met my list of priorities at the most resonable price. Traditional air cooled V-Twin, dual disc up front, fuel injection, belt drive, and low enough for 5'9" frame to straddle. Sorry for the long, drawn out post.

A biker is a biker wether he/she wears the outer accortements, its the character that he carries within, wether anyone is looking or not. We are the last symbols of the knights of the round table, or the American Cowboy...I believe that the inner character of a "biker" recognizes others of like kind and does not need recognition from others to reaffirm what he knows for himself...
