Will oil come out? 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Hey quick question (and likely a dumb one)... if I remove the crankcase cover (see image below), will oil come out? Is this an area where oil resides? I'm gonna be changing out my cam cover (little Yamaha circular chrome thingy) and need to remove the whole cover to do so, apparently.

Thanks for your advice.

Yes a small amount of oil may come out, but not much as it is on the side stand that is the high side.

So it'd be best if I did this cam cover change-out during an oil change when I have drained the oil, eh?

I just did mine and nothing came out. Make sure you have an extra gasket handy. I was VERY careful and still tore it.

I pulled mine to do the lifter leak-down. Not much came out at all.

To reinstall you need black silicone to form a gasket.

Form a thin gasket, install to snug, cure, tighten & trim (with finger nail).

I actually have a new gasket for it... bought it a couple weeks ago at the dealer.

I personally do not like silicone used for gasketing purposes. And, yes I realize that there are many people who use it. During my Big Bore rebuild on my XS I used it for the head and then had to remove the head after the silicone had set. What a mess it was! No matter how thinly you apply it, it squeezes out on the inside, and the resultant bead will tend to loosen over time and get into the motor. And it sticks tenaciously wherever you don't want it to, making removal a real chore. My advice- stick with a good gasket, and apply a very thin layer of grease to one side. You will be able to remove the part several times without damaging the gasket or causing a leak.
Just a hint from an amateur rebuilder..
