I believe the biggest thing is checking the valves

Rather than type it all out it's listed in the owners manual. If you don't have one you can look at it here - Star

I finally wound up just taking my bike (due to lack of time) into a shop for the service. Since I got it back, there is an oil leak that seems to be coming from the shaft behind the main drive pulley. The tech is saying thats a "known issue" for the roadstar. I haven't read anything on here about that, is he just trying to get out of fixing it? part of what he did was lubing the swing arm so he had to remove the belt, right?

It is a known issue, and could be from a couple different things. In my case and what I believe that it was not torqued right at the factory, at approx 45k miles I got the leak. The pulley nut was loose. My thinking, is that on a 1600 engine they use a lock washer that folds over so the nut can't back out, so if that's true, then how was it the nut was loose? Unless of course it was not tightened to factory spec, and since the service manual says nothing about maintenance, and there's a cover over the pulley, how is anyone to know. It also started to damage the splines to both the pulley and middle drive shaft, which I got Mama Yamaha to pay for during the tranny recall.
When the pulley is loose, it will cause an oscillation on the drive shaft damaging the oil seal and o-ring. hence the leak.
Also, a too tight a belt can also put undue stress on the middle drive shaft and too cause the seal to leak.
In your case, to be honest, if it were from too tight a belt, I think it would take a bit of time before it would develop a leak, really hard to say tho
Sure the belt will fall out of place. but he doesn't have to touch the pulley nut

Like Erbman02 said it is known to happen. I just caught it on my 06 because I happened to notice my belt was running in a different place on the rear pulley than it normally does. When I pulled the cover off the nut was loose enough to take off with my hand. Yamamama doesn't use the lock washer instead it's a compression washer. I think Erbman hit it right that some one doesn't torque the nut right at the factory. Mine has just over 45,000 miles also. mmmmmmmm
makes one wonder.

I know that he had the swing arm off to lube everything back there. So mabe the belt was to tight, and when he released the pressure and putit back on? I don't know... It didn't leak and now it does... I guess it goes back to the guy...

Talked to the tech on the phone. He mentioned a ''seep hole'' that will allow the tranny fluid to run out in its been overfilled. I looked in the service manual and didn't see anything. Can someone point this out to me?

Not sure what he is talking about. There is no "Tranny Fluid" perse'. The tranny is lubed by engine oil as it passes through. No way to overfill the tranny since it is a semi dry sump. Is it possible he was talking about the transfer gear case? Even so, I don't know of a weep hole in that either.
