I just bought my first roadstar...I'm lost 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Hello,

I'm new to the roadstar and this forum. I just bought my 03 Roadstar 1600 from a guy for 5800. It is beatiful! Unfortunately I get it home on the trailer(and yes I test drove it) I pull the choke out all the way...hit the starter, and it has the syptoms of a low battery. It just seems like its not enough. So I plug it up and it reads charged. I call the individual and he says to only pull the choke about halfway and then try to start it, because roadstars are finicky. Then when it starts slowly pull the choke all the way. I did this and I'm still getting the symptons of a realllly low battery. Any advice is appreciated. And I will post pics as soon as I cool down a bit.

First of all WELCOME to the forum...you will love this place!!! I would pull the battery out and have it tested. It could take a charge but the cranking amps might be down. Any auto parts store or battery store should test it for free. If the battery checks out then you need to make sure the compression release is working. Good luck!

I have had my Roadstar since it was new and it turns over slow..I thought the same as you in the beginning but it is typical of these bikes.
I have to pull my choke out all the way when the engine is cold during cold weather, as soon as it starts I set it half way then let it warm for a minute or so and pull away at 1/4 choke for a mile or so.
Welcome and good luck with your bike

I agree ... the battery needs to be up to snuff or you'll never get it started. You have no idea how old that batter is.

Get it tested.

Things will work out. We all need to buy a new battery from time to time.
They are great motorcycles, just have fun.

Well the guy I bought if from claims the battery is a year and a half old. I must admit when I test drove her down the highway...WOW it was awsome! I just got rid of my 650 v star and upgraded to this. I can't wait to figure out how to start it lol.

Do a search on this site for compression release or decompression solenoid and you should find out how to test it.

An ohm/volt meter is not good enough. You need to have a load test done on the battery.

Compression release is under a cover on the right side, just rearward of the round cover at the base of the cylinders that says Yamaha. Take the cover off. The spoon should just be touching the plunger (has a white end on it) and when you start the bike the plunger moves outward pushing on the spoon.

Ok I'll check the compression first thing in the morning. And I have a battery tester that tests the load. Had to buy it for my other star bc it wasnt charging the battery
