I did Michigan to cali (yosemite/deathvalley), down to the Alamo and back in just under 10 days this past fall. i just brought clothes for both warm and cold weather (extra socks and undies) - worn them a few days and washed them at hotel. def bring rain gear! i brought my laptop with me, so at night at the hotel i could figured out where i was gonna be/do/see and make hotel reservations online for the next day (i winged my whole trip and was the best vacation i ever did). this year if i can get off work - gonna try riding up to alaska.

Farm, just bring enough money or credit cards with you to take care of emergencies. Cell phone. Rain Gear. Try and just take what you need. I tend to buy new clothes to replace my dirty ones if I can't get them washed. ( Riding thru a rain storm counts )

If you have an after market air filter bring a rain coat for it. I tend to bring alot as I pull a trailer. The most important things are.
Rain Gear
Credit Card
Cell Phone
We have pulled that trailer 5500 miles in 3 weeks so I guess that would count for doing long distance??

I've made a few long hauls across the country. Pack light. I packed for three days (undies , socks , tees) worth of clothes , then I stopped and washed. Tools are easy to overdo , so just pack the essentials. Medications (RX) must be packed in their pharmacy bottles (so police know it's yours....it's a law). I always carry a good Map book , and find myself using it on occasion. Just a few things to add to the other guys thoughts. BB

These are good suggestions duct tape is always handy. Water is also important if summer you could dehydrate actually even in the fall you could. Tends to lend itself to fatigue and cramping so start hydrating at least three days in advance of trip and throughout the trip.

Water bottle is a good idea, as long as you use it.. otherwise its dead weight. I find as far as warm clothes goes, ride wearing most of it, at least if the outside air temps are cooler. The beauty of that kind of stuff is you can bundle it all up in a ball and throw it under a cargo net on the back of the bike if it really warms up, but otherwise you can use it most of the time. Spare socks and undies, you don't have to go so hard on pants (or T-shirts.. behold, the might power of Old Spice!) Are you going to be tenting or in hotels? Hotels give you the ability to dry things out overnight if it comes to that. But yeah, pack less than you need and keep some cash or plastic handy in case you forget anything.

I'm an lightweight backpacker and the rule is when in doubt...throw it out!
Credit card is number one, wear one set of clothes and have one to change in to that it along with rain gear (which will also provide wind/cold protection). Only tool I would take over and above what is in the tool kit is a small selection of allen wrenches.
Don't put too much stock in a cell phone by the way. In the West its not like in the East. No cell towers every couple miles. Still lots and lots of blank spaces without cell service.

Best thing to pack is common sense! Oh and Slothy did it right, wing it dude!

Don't bring more than 2 T shirts. I always buy some along the way from memorable places/events.

But then again I usually end up with 3/4 of a saddlebag of just camera equipment.

Here is a good list from a seminar a local company put on.

http://dadfriedrich.googlepages.com/tripList.jpg

Get good quality wicking underware / shirts / socks (e.g. Under Armour). take 3 sets.
wear one set, each night, wash it out, roll it tight in a motel towel, hang it out and it will be dry in the morning. In theory, 1 set is all you need, but ... some days it might still be wet the next morning, and some nights you are too tired to fuss with it, so take 3 sets, they can be compressed into a tiny space. I wear serious leathers while riding, and pack a pair of those pants that have a zipper in each leg, they can be rolled into a tight space, and worn as long pants or shorts at night, depending on the temp.
