No idea what your tail light looks like now Doc, but a stock one would look funny on your bike.
(just to break up the repetition here.)

I have a dual setup and I want to replace the OEM 1600 light. I've found a set of bag lights that would go nicely with the 1700 taillight.

I need to know what the chrome ring covers?

Doc if you google images, Roadstar tail lights, lots of images come up and links to alternatives. They even had a LED that was split into 3 bars so the one light had Turns built in. It appears to be three parts, the LED light panel, a chrome ring, and a Lens cover. So the chrome covers what you see. Pretty much a ring.

Here's one on Ebay. You'd just need 3 screws to attach it. I put one of these on my brothers Royal Star & it looks quite good. Btw, the ring just covers a flange around the edge of the light assembly. as best I could tell, there's no way to replace the led inside the assembly. It looked to me to be glued together. I guess if the light went bad the whole thing would have to be replaced.
