I'm with takehikes...
My computing days started around 1981 when I used to use a RadioShack TRS-80... (I still have my original copy of Microsoft 2.0 with the DOS 3.22 operating system that I got in 1984...) And, I'm sure by now, the TRS is probably the inside fender well of a Subaru somewhere...

The ironic thing is, that out of the 3 laptops and 2 towers I have in my house... I get really cranky when any of them slow down while they're running some software routine... that is, until I remember that old TRS...

And, then I remember... the slowest computer in the house... (the one that runs the security programing software and still has a 2400 Baud modem... Don't ask...) Is still ten times more powerful that the computers they used to put a man on the moon...

You brought up the issue of Heat with laptops, did you ever notice why Intel based are called laptops and AMD based are called Notebooks? AMD processors get really hot and to prevent lawsuits from people burning their legs while using them, they called them notebooks, not implying that you can set it on your lap. Betcha didn't know that, didya?

One other thing to remember, if you use your laptop, do not leave it in the case....ie, just opening it up while in the case, take it out so the fans can cool it, or it will get VERY HOT and most likely quit until it cools down, but hey, you can always make toast if you have the bread.

Cool,
I did not know that about laptop vs notebook. Just goes to show there is no limit to expanding ones mind in the clinic

I certainly am not a computer (laptop or netbook) expert, but I do know netbooks also come with Intel processors. We just bought a Toshiba netbook with the Intel Intel/Atom processor. I was told we have 30 days to return the item if it did not meet our needs. So far it has exceeded my expectations......works great with all the programs I generally use, no heat issues despite being used on my lap, no issues connecting to WiFi, etc. I don't intent to use the netbook as a replacement for my desktop, but it looks like the netbook will be a great travel partner.

Any rate, anyone know what kind of oil I should use in my R*.......

Then netbook is a really nice little travel computer, the Atom Processor is pretty good, but lacks on L2 Cache, so the longer you have it, the slower it will get, unless you clear the cache from time to time. Regular maintenance on a computer is just as important as regular maintenance on you bike, car, truck, washer/dryer, fridge....ect...

not to sound like a dick, but L1/L2/L3 cache on a processor and website cache are 2 different things completely and dont even remotely have anything to do with each other.

haha i like! but we do have some intel chip'd laptops that well i bet i could cook eggs on after a few mins of stressing it out. i Only run Intel here at work on laptops and 95% of our pc's are intel. But the new amd's are getting to the point they are 1/2 the price of some of the intels on comparable speeds.

To anyone looking to buy a computer... PM me or just ask on this thread BEFORE you just go get a "Good Deal".

Just picked up the Toshiba L505 ES5018, and your thoughts. Only thing I have found and many others in review is the low spkr volume. and built in web cam not the best either
I thought for what it had, seemed like a decent price at 499.99, 320Ghd 3m ddr3

Not a bad deal, it's an older Pentium processor, 3gbs of Ram with Win 7 Home will do OK as long as you don't put any big memory hog programs on it and keep the spyware off it. The Hard drive is a good size but it's the SLOW Hard drive.

Do NOT use LIME WIRE!!!! Virus city!!! Also do NOT download all the "Tool Bars" for yahoo, google, or anyone else who recommends that you download their tool bar. Just use the one that's already there, the others will NOT help you.

All the things that you shouldn't do with Gates Operating Systems - makes me think the next computer will be a mac..

If lime wire is bad....where is the best place to get music free!

Re:Lap Tops 2 Years, 2 Months ago
Thank you all for the great discussion while it is not related to Roadies it is the primary mode of communication for us here. I will be the butt of all the jokes that will follow, so have fun. I use computers all day everyday at work. I have no idea how to maintain them as we have professional IT support at work. My only issue is that like our bikes there is a language for computers that I just do not understand. It was mentioned that we need to clear cache. OK I am guessing that means that we need to clean out a deposit somewhere, but I have no idea how or where or what the heck I am doing. I can clear cookies and history, but the rest is a mystery. Perhaps you smart guys could break it down for us dumb guys and help to create a basic maintenance routine. I know my PC at home is slowing down a bunch lately and probably has some bug, although my McAfees does not seem to find anything.
Any help would be appreciated. Please remember ther jargon is not always understood and I apologize in advance for my ignorance.
