You are actually better off using an approved Plexiglas polish made to get scratches out of plastic type windows and aircraft canopy's.
You can also use crest tooth paste, I have used it to remove the cloud from the clear plastic shell a boat compass is housed in, they get cloudy from being in the sun and not covered up, to find out if mothers is really ok, after you do a small edge section position the windshield between you and the sun and look through it at different angles and make sure you dont see a bunch of what look like hairline cracks... that condition is called crazing, it usually happens when ammonia based product or Windex is used to clean plastic/Plexiglas windows.
Good luck and happy motoring

Really? We're not supposed to use Windex? Oops. I've used it and I think i have those small scratches. I thought it was from the cloth or paper towel. I'll try the Mother's trick...gonna try without the windsheild for a while. If Wisconsin ever warms up.

Wonder if it work on my scratches when I get the bike back?

Curt, I think you might need 'great-grand-mothers' for those scratches!

By the way, there are a couple of product that are made specifically for Lexan and plexiglass. Plast-X is one and Mothers makes one too, just can't remember the name. Both work great on your windshield, but also on your car or trucks headlight covers that are looking foggy. They'll look brand new if they aren't too badly fogged.

If they are fogged to the point of being opaque, you can sand them with super fine wet sand paper and then use a Mothers polishing ball with plastic polish to bring them back. Time consuming, but inexpensive compared to replacement.

Ratl.

Guys,
Again, if you are running the Factory Yamaha Shield, It has a special coating on it that can be rubbed, scratched through. When I got my bike last year, A 99 Silverado there were several odd spots on the winshield that looked like it was peeling. I thought that mabey the origonal owner didn't peel off the protective film when he bought it and I thought what I was seeing was a hardened film over time just wearing away. I could scratch it off with mt fingernail. I had since found out that Yamaha has a special coating on their shields to protect from road wear etc. I have a new shield now and it is crystal clear and i don't use anything but a damp chamois and a microfiber towel to carefully clean it now.

X2 on the coating. Mine is very milky from sitting outside for five years (PO). I've been outside rubbing the crap out of that thing for the last two hours (coincidently with Mother aluminum polish) before I figured out it was the coating gone bad. I moved up to a fairly rough polishing compound and still no luck. I cant tell you if the Mothers will scratch the coating, but the areas where I did remove the coating down to the lexan it is crystal clear.

Can you replace just the lexan? I might be interested in that route since my chrome is fine.

This won't get the scratches out but it will get the bugs off.
After a ride where I get a lot of bugs on the windshiled, I'll take an old clean towel big enough to cover the wind shield and soak it in boiling water, I usually use one of those Pirex measuring cups in the micro wave. Stuff the towel into it to soak up the hot water and lay it on the windshield. Leave it for a couple of minutes and pull it off and all the soggy little critters will come away with it. I have a towel in the garage that I just use for this,,,makes the wife happy. Anyway try it...less than 5 minutes total...no rubbing or scuffing.
