2002 Midnight Star progress 2 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
Here is a link to my facebook album with pictures of the before, during, and soon after of my bike. I have bedline painted my body pieces, I am de-bobbing the bad bobbing on the rear fender, I am having the rims powedercoated red, and I painted the hubs and discolored spokes. Check it out an let me know what you think. I will add updates here as I add pictures there.

curious, what product did ya use? how much prep work to old paint? clearcoat? I like the way it came out, more like a charcoal, I was expecting it to be darker.

I used the black duplicolor bedliner. As far as prep goes, I washed everything, then when it dried I scuffed it good with grade #0 steel wool, abd lastly wiped it down with acetone and a tack cloth. The finish is black, buy has a cool eggshell texture and sheen to it. I put 3 coats of paint on. I'm really happy with it. Can't wait to fnish rear fender.

I'm interested to see the final product, especially the wheel/pulley combo.

I have uploaded 5 more pictures of my rear fender reconstruction. Check the link above. I am pretty excited about it. I overlapped the fender like it was, but I extended it about 5" down. I used jb-weld and rivets until it cured and I drilled out rivets. I then used an aluminium filler bondo and built up the shape I wanted as best I could. I used a series of filling and sanding. I also bondoed bottom joint under fender as well. After it was all dried and sanded, I primed it top and bottom for extra sealant. The applied layers of bedliner paint to top as well as bottom at joint. I figured it would help prevent with cracking. And wola I'm happy.

You're a brave man. Hope it turns out well and I'd like to see the results!
A little confusion here: what did you do...extend the rear fender using parts from another fender, or shorten it?
What did yo do with the spokes?
I really like that Sears Gold MC Jack. How do you like it?

The fender was originally cut and overlapped by the previous owner. While disassembling the sub-frame, the two pieces fell apart. There was enough material of the 2 pieces that I could extend it out and have "less" of an overlap.
The spokes I cleaned and then rubbed with some Grade #0 steel wool, 2 coasts of self-etching primer, 2 coats of a silverish wheel paint, and then 2 coats of a clear coat wheel paint.
That's actually the harbor freight aluminum jack. So far I like it a lot and it works pretty well.
