I Have my Bike Running - Now what? 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I got a new used carb for my Roadstar (2000 model) and rejetted the main jet to the stock 165. I had a 172 on my other carb and the new/used on had a 175. I got it on and the bike running today. After dialing in the idle I took it for a spin. It ran great and was about to take it on the open raod and wind it up, when it started to chug and hesitate in 2nd and 3rd, did not get it any higher. It is blowing some black smoke also. Do I need to dial in the pilot jet also some more? I turned it out 2 1/2 turns when cleaned and installed the new one.

You can see my other thread regarding flooded fuel system as it was burping gas too.

Thanks

Why did you bud a new carb?

Which needle do you have in the carb and how is it set?

Do you have a fuel pump?

I used the needles I had in my old carb and did not set it any way. I am pretty much of a rookie on this but having fun figureing it all out. It also does some backfiring when I rev it up and blows flames out the exhaust. Too much gas??What adjustments should I make?

Ah yes .... I see now.

I would have changed the float bowl on the old carb rather than changing the jets on the new carb but that probably would not have helped as you had problems with the original carb so .....

Take the carb completely apart clean it well with carb cleaner. Make sure all the orifices are clear. There should be no gummy residue.

Check the float level.

Put it back together with the 165 and stock needle.

Set PMS to 2.5 turns out from lightly seated.

Test drive.
