Puking Carb??? 2 Years, 2 Months ago  
This past weekend I went for a quick 60 mile ride with temps in the high 50's. When I returned I parked in the garage and went inside and came back out in 15 minutes or so to the smell of gasoline and a small puddle in the floor. I noticed a puddle of gas behind the rear cylinder at the base of the crankcase. How the gas got there is a mystery to me. There was no trail of gas to that point. Keying up, the fuel pump ran for quite a while, indicating the bowl was empty. No leakage could be found. I did a quick search on RSC and found that this common as I suspect I may have winter fuel but in the three years I've owned this bike, this is a first. It repeated the same thing after another thirty minute ride. There is no tube running from the overflow and it concerns me a little to have gasoline being dumped on a hot engine.

Any explanations for how the fuel is getting to this spot on the engine?

There is a drain on the bottom of the bowl. I would suspect that is you had fuel cont. to flow in to the carb the gas would drain out of this tube. It is faceing the inside of the engine, and drips right between the rod tubes. When the bike is on the kick stand, it can make its way around the back of the cyl. Get a hose and run it away from the crank. You will have to be crative to hide it well.

For some reason these bikes do that sometimes. Mine tends to do it during hot weather after prolonged riding at highway speeds, i'll shut it down then come out to start it again and it will cough fuel out through the tub mentioned above. It doesn't do it all the time so I haven't thought of it as a major problem. The way I deal with it is to shut off the fuel petcock about 15 seconds before I shut her down. As far as I know others have had this problem too.

The overflow is what it is flowing out of, not the drain on the bottom. You can tube that tube and run a tube to the ground, Not a good idea Gas on hot engine less likely to encounter a tossed cig. Butt. Go pumpless is your cure. Pumpless! In Tech section.

The gas pukes out the line that goes to Air cleaner and dead ends there from Carb.

MS1700 I'm assuming by your comment that you are running pumpless. One of many winter mods I did was to remove the pump as well. (Primarily to combat the carb puke issue) Just curious how you're running you gas line from the petcock to the carb, are you going over the intake and down or running under the intake?

Also, last week on a fuel mileage run it sputtered at ~160 miles and I switched to reserve. It just didn't seem to run as strong, almost like it was getting "just enough" fuel, but just barely. I suspect it might be how I've got the fuel line run. (5/8" line to a small filter, over the intake then down to carb)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

First. Since puking usually happens in high temps and it hasn't happened before I would think sticky float or float needle not sealing before I started taking pieces off the bike. Unless you want to take the pump off.

Second. Many people who do have the puking problem just shut the gas off a ways before they park and it works fine. You don't always have to take the pump off to deal with puking.

My .0002 cents anyway

I ran 'Just' Pumpless for a while, Line is in the same spring stuff that is on Org. line and run below the manifold, Makes it easier to pop carb off for adjustments.

What you need to run is Pumpless, Vented Gas Cap, Suzuki Float valve and a Pingle hi Flow cleanable and reusable Gas In Line filter (See max air web site) and a Pingle Fuel Cock (Hi Flow) Also see Max Air.

People can debate all day about if you need Pingle Hi Flow Fuel cock, You don't. But I used to also run out of fuel just Pumpless with Stock fuel Cock, Like when in a drag with another bike.

The fuel flow is MUCH greater out of a Pingle Hi Flow. And it draws gas lower in the tank, This is very obvious when you get it and compare it, and how it mounts to the stock Fuel cock.

I never measured the flow of one VS the other, but I use my bike to go get gas for the mower and I connect a line to fill it, Way faster with the pingle. Like night and day!

You can do any of these MODS one at a time as budget allows. In the end the bike is more reliable and on road serviceable.

Thanks to all for your input and advice...I agree going pumpless is probably the best approach. I'm an engineer with an electric fuel pump manufacturer but still a firm believer that gravity never fails but fuel pumps will.

IMHO thats a Half of a Puking carb, sorta like puking in your mouth and being able to swallow it.

A full puking carb is one where you know it's going to puke........... so you shut the fuel off a block from the house, you glide in, jump off and push it into the shop if you have to. Let it sit and when you get back on and start it, the fuel pump forces fuel out @ a rate of 2 gallons a minute!

Turning the fuel on after startup, or 'sneaking it on slowly' will not prevent a full puking carb. Only several turn on and off of the key will do the trick. And a lot of jacking with the throttle as it is now flooded and some wear of the starter over cranking it. Happy happy, Joy Joy! Recall!
