Watch Your Rear Brake Pads!!! 2 Years ago
I was doing a bags off cleaning today and that is a great time to check out the rear brake. Good thing I did as my pads replaced 14 months and 7,800 miles ago were worn almost to the metal!!! The original pads lasted over 22,000 miles and still had plenty at least a milimeter left before reaching the service limit. These were EBC pads. I have never heard a complaint about the pads so was really surprised when they were gone so fast. I went to the stealer to get new pads and thought I would go with the stockers, but the Yamaha dealer only carries EBC Sintered pads. I have heard that the sintered pads are really hard on rotors, but got them so I could get the bike back on the road. What is everybody's experience with EBC Sintered pads and why would my non sintered pads wear so fast???
The caliper was completely cleaned when I replaced the pads including running the pistons out cleaning them and then pushing them back in. I did not detect any dragging, or rubbing from the pads so was really surprised to see such short life.

Lemons come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Cars, tires, appliances, you name it. Looks like something else made it past quality control.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same pads or not.But mine are the hard metallic ones on the front and they're driving me crazy! It almost sounds like it's steel on steel And I can here a scraping sound when I go down the road.I pulled them off once to check them 2 weeks ago and they were like new.I'm going to change them to the softer organic kind.

No my pads were organic, and 7,800 miles is not much life from a set of pads, but I can see why the stealer only carries the EBC pads as they get to sell 3 times as many sets for $34. The metalic type you are talking about are sintered pads and they are much harder. I am putting sintered on as that is all I could get. Hope they are not too noisy. Supposed to make less dust.

I just replaced both front and rear about a month ago. Organic on the front and sintered on the rear. So far so good.

I will have the same set up in a day when I put the sintered pads on the rear. I was just stunned to see the pad gone at 7,800 miles. The stock pad lasted over 22K and still had life left in it. Just glad I caught it before the rotor got messed up!!!

i had about 12k on my ebc HH's up front (single front caliper) and rear and there was still plenty of pad/rotor left. the rear had alittle more meat left then the front.

wow, I guess I did ride a lot of freeway, and never needed to use the brakes, I had almost 50 thousand on the bike and never replaced any of them just lots of tires.

I have to agree with you bowhunter. That's about what I got out of my set on the 00. But I have an 02 that I got recently and the bike only had 18,000 on it. Since I decided to change out the rear wheel & tire I looked at the brakes and good thing I did cause they were paper thin. So I would say the P.O. was probably a lot harder on the brake pedal then I am.
