Well, it's either leaking or it's burning, but it can't do either one undetected!!!

If you're not going to trust the 4 quart rule and are insisting on checking the oil volume with the dipstick you need to just go ahead and put your Road Star up for sale because you're NEVER going to have time to ride. You're constantly going to be trying to determine how much oil is in the thing, get ticked off and have the opinion that the bike is crap.

In reality the bike is fantastic, it's just the method for checking the oil is flawed.

Trust us man, put the 4 quarts in. screw down the dipstick and unless you have a leak or your trailing blue smoke the oil level is just fine. Again, if you can't work with that head down to Wally-mart and get you a sign like the one below.

I think if I just had the recall done and they had the motor apart and put new rings in it when the recall was done and now it's using oil. It would be going back to find out what they did wrong. If they say nothing is wrong make sure you get "GOOD" documentation that a complaint of oil use was filed. That will give you some leverage in the event of a major problem.

grey wolf,
did you put the cap in and run it to move the oil out of the tank?
It fills up to easy when you do not run the engine for a moment, but remember to put the cap in and screw it.

another ? are you sure that the proper plug is removed to get oil out?

oil should come out of both real easy if the proper plug is removed, both should drain even if one is takin out and empty, the other still drains when removed.. that can give you a thought or area of where the oil is going, basically which is empty engine or tank..

anyway hope this is all good info for you.
here is a link for oil change with nice pics

I think we all have made a mistake in the past, so good info to track down the parts and see where the oil is.

Oh yah forgot, Davej when the engine was rebuilt... A bit of oil like break-in of a new bike would be understandable, but over 2 qts sounds extreme.
Just seems odd that this much oil is not showing up somewhere... bike would rattle like a drum that low on oil..

Have a '01 Silverado and as the others say, 4 qts in and 4 qts out( new filter ) !

I changed mine for the first time last year and if I hadn't bought a service manual from JP Cycles and decided to check out HOW to change the oil on this bike I'd jacked it all up no doubt ! But it was easy enough !
