Lifter noise 2 Years ago
I constantly hear ticking that sounds like the lifters. Now when I first bought this bike I didn't hear it at all when it was cold. When it warmed up I could hear it.Now I hear it all the time but what worries me is as I'm traveling down the road I hear what I think is 1 that tics loader than the rest. When it first started it would come and go while at a constant speed now I'm starting to hear it more often.Could this be the early stages of s.v.s I've heard you guys talk about? The other thing is the vibration at a certain rpm I mean it blurs my vision.A couple rpm higher or lower and it goes away is this normal?

These things vibrate at certain rpms because the crank isn't counter balanced. Both my bikes do it my 07 is worse than the 05 at it. It seems to be just above 1500 rpm once I get closer to 2000 it goes away. As for the ticking it is the rocker arms I am sure and these bike make a lot of noise you can switch to synthetic oil and get rid of a mot of it. Do a search on engine noise and there is a lot of info about it. Depending on your mileage you may need to adjust your valves. Worst case you may have a lift going flat.

What kind of oil are you using? I don't want to start another "oil war" on here, but most of us will agree not to use any type of "gasoline-engined car oil". Alot of guys have success with Mobil 1 "V-Twin", Castrol "Act>evo", Shell "Rotella T", YamaLube, etc (I'm sure I'm leaving out alot of great oils) in viscosities from 5W-40 to 20W-50 (just make sure the last number is "40" or "50" ). As you have mentioned, SVS is a possibility. I've never experienced it, thank to preventive advice I've gotten on this site, but to my knowledge it can include symptoms you've described. You can search this site for a "shock treatment" cure that involves massive amounts of Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil poured into the fuel, being driven near the engine's rev limit for a time, followed by an oil change, preferably with a top-shelf, motorcycle-safe synthetic oil.
This being said, a large-bore, air-cooled engine such as ours will make some valve noise & vibrate at times; all part of the nature of the beasts that we love so much!

It could be simple? The oil may have broken down due to gas, miles, age, brand. Like the guys said try a full synthetic oil and see if it quietns down.

I have used syn. and have better luck with dino oil 20-50 val.four stroke. in the middle of summer (FL) when I change I'll add one 1qt of val 50w racing oil to the mix due to the heat. 20-50 syn.(all brands) rattle as bad as 10-40 in my bike.you got to find what your bike likes .try several dif. brands . as said before these bike make a "LOT OF TOP END NOISE" just have to get used to.I did and don't regret it one bit!!!! but do check your lift. clearance.

Re:Lifter noise 2 Years ago
Ditto. I've got an 03. Had 12,000 mi on it when I got it last august. Had a light tick. Orig owner has run mob 1 v twin since first oil change. I changed oil when I got it w/amsoil 20/50. Next time at16,000 mi w/amsoil 20/50. Next time at 20,000 mi but w/mob 1 v twin since it's almost impossible to get cycle oil around here where I live for some reason. Now the ticking is louder even w/ fresh mob 1. Called dealer for price for valve adjust and was told...DONT DO IT!!! I've been working on these since they came out and have never had to adjust valves on one. The sound is normal! But if you want to give is $350.00 for no reason bring it in. I can deal w/engine noise but not this tapping. It's definately louder than it was. Yes I regularly use sea foam every other tank. Love this bike but between the belt noise and the valves i'm starting to wonder.

use regular bath bar soap on the belt. rub it on the inside a couple of times it will work for belt noise. Try it!! far as the engine noise it is what it is.

Check all your motor mount bolts. I've heard of this problem in the past and that is one cause.

You don't say what year it is, but, my '99 was ticking and getting louder. Turned out I had 3 out of 4 lifters were bad. Found a cross reference for a jeep and replaced all 4. took about 2 hours. Sounds like a danged sewing machine, now I need louder pipes.
