Stage 2 Jet Kit 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Hey guys, I have a situation I was wondering if you could help me out. I have a 2000 Roadie with 18,000 miles. I bought the bike used. It already had Vance and Hines Longshots and a Kuryakyn Air Kit. The pipes have High flow baffles. I don't think the bike had been jetted. I purchased a stage II jet kit from Dynajet and had a local dealer install it since I was having them do my 17,000 mile major service. I got the bike back and it ran fine on idle and cruising up to 80 mph. My problem is that anytime I really get on the throttle the bike sputters and black smoke comes out of the pipes. The gas mileage was also horrible. This happens regardless of speed. I took the bike back to the dealer and he said "That he put it back to Stage I because the Stage II Jet kit is just too big for what I've got" Does this sound right to you? I would have thought that it was simply a matter of dialing the air fuel mix in on the carbs. Am I wrong?

John

A Dynojet Stage I runs a 160 or 165 main jet vs the 190 or 195 for the Stage II.

It's obvious that the Stage II setup is too rich, but with the Longshots and air cleaner I would have thought the Stage 1 would be a bit lean. I would have expected a DJ 180 or 185 main jet would have been more appropriate.

How's it running now with the Stag I setup?

Hi Doc, thanks for the response. I don't know yet. The service Manager wants to ride it first and make sure it's running ok. I might get it back tomorrow. It just doesn't make sense to me.

had to chime in here...
i think that a #165 main would be ok....
and if its puffing the black smoke it is probably the needle set to high...
i would set it a clip lower and then see if it is any better....
if it still smokes... try the #160 main and the #4 clip....
that is if its not already on the fourth already...
i am not trying to contradict the Doc...
but i tryly belive that these bikes are set up WAAAY too rich most of the time...
humbly my 2 cents

Thanks Warthog. Maybe I should just stick with the Stage one. The kit I bought came with both. Stage I and II. If they get the Stage I in and get it dialed in correctly I will just stay with that and be happy. My lowering kit just came in so it's time to work on that anyway.

By the way, I like your fenders. I am looking to do something similar. Can I ask you what kind they are and where you got them?

Warhog,

"i am not trying to contradict the Doc..."

All opinions are welcomed and encouraged. Information is power and the more information John has the better decision he can make. Thanks for your input.

I agree with you re the 'way too rich' and would agree that a 165 may work if he had the Mikuni needle but remember that he's using the DJ jets and the 165 DJ is equivalent to a Mikuni 155 which will make the bike way too lean.

In the end John appears to have a dealer that is knowledgeable and is going in the right direction in trying to resolve his problem. Let's see where he ends up.

Yeah, Doc. Sorry. I was talking about your fenders. I've seen a few like those. Looney Customs makes some and of course Barons and Ness. I'm just curious as to where you got yours. I like that Gansta look! LOL

John,

The front fender is Wernimont Long Shot. I cut the sides to the match the shape of the wheels. You can see pics on my website at: http://ca.geocities.com/docshadow@rogers.com/Front-fender.htm

The back is custom-made .... by me I bought a steel trailer fender, cut and shaped it, welded on the brackets, and fiberglassed it all up. With the steel core it is solid enough that I can sit (and bounce ) on it. It would probably hold up for a passenger but I have the stock fender/bag setup that I use for two up riding.
