Persistent SVS,,, Any Ideas??? 2 Years ago
Hey everybody,,, I've been lurking here since I bought my bike new 2 years ago and have really benefited from the info here so I wanted to begin by saying thank you for all the great technical tips

The SVS on my roadie began about 6 months after I bought it. Since then I've done Curt's SVS treatment twice, added either ring free or seafoam to every tank (neither seems to really do much), shocked with seafoam before every oil change, replaced spark plugs, and hit the rev limiter as much as possible. I had it dynoed and everything showed to be pretty dead on, a tad bit lean even.

I've had a KN Forcewinder intake and LA Choppers Curved and Stacked exhaust on it since I got it new. The dealer put those on and rejetted it before I ever rode it. So I guess my question is this: is there anything else I can do to prevent SVS in a more long term way? I think it's lame that everytime I get on it I have to endure 2-3 miles of backfiring and dying.

What is the jetting on your bike? If you don't know , you need to find out. BB

hmm,,, I'll have to call the dealer to find out. Is it possible that I will have to change the jetting even though the dyno indicates all is well?

Well......the problem still persist , and experience has told the story time and again. Many bikes that are jetted are jetted too rich , and the extra fuel makes carbon , and that leads to SVS. Would not hurt to know the exact jetting , to see if something needs to be tweaked. BB

You need to know the main and pilot jet sizes as well as what brand they are. You also need to know what brand needle is in there and what clip it is on including the number of (if any) spacers are on the needle. You'll need to know how amny turns out the PMS is too.

Good luck. Also just a word of incouragement. It is really easy to remove the carb and find these things out yourself. It will save you a lot of money in the long run as well as giving you a serious sense of pride and ownership in your bike.

Great advice man,,, Luckily I've had a forum like this to help me learn about the ins and outs of my first bike. I guess I'm a bit nervous to go into this uncharted territory at the moment because I'm making the trip to Austin for the ROT Rally in 3 weeks. I don't want to do more harm than good with trial and error stuff until after that long ride.

As I've said before, the dealership did the original rejetting so I don't even know if they can even tell me what brand or size they put on there. Would it be beneficial to just get a new jet kit and start over on my own? If so, what kit should I buy? thanks again for everyone's replies!

Remember, it's only uncharted territory the first time.

If all you changed was the pipes and have the stock air box, you need your stock main and needle. I forget what the spacer/washer stack in on a stock setup, but I'm sure we can get you on the road long before your planned ride.

Yeah I'm not at all opposed to just scrapping what the dealership did and starting over and fine tuning myself. I switched out the pipes and am running a KN Forcewinder intake on a '07
