which gear oil to use 1 Year, 12 Months ago
I need to know if anyone has tried using Lucas 85W90 in the gear box? I'm getting ready to service my 1600 and want to know of a high quality oil to use. Also, has anyone tried the E3 spark plugs? I have them in my ATV, lawn tractor and vehilce and they work great! I'm going to give them a shot. Any tips is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Lucas, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc., are good to use RSTAR99. Can't give you an opinion on the E3 though. I use NGK iridiums.

I use Amsoil Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube SAE 75W-90 API GL4 that I got from my local Bap-Geon.

I assume that you are talking about the transfer case which only has a chain and sprockets (no gears) and 2 shafts. The transmission gears (gear box) are lubed by the engine oil.
If the Lucas oil you are considering is conventional oil, make sure it is GL-4. Most conventional gear lubes that I found were GL-5. GL-4 is recommended for our bikes and is almost impossible to find. I just changed my transfer case oil to Mobil 1 LS Synthetic gear lube ($8.95 for a quart at O'Reillys). It is GL-4 and GL-5 compatible. From what I understand, conventional GL-5 gear oil has additives in it that may damage "yellow metals". I'm not sure if there are any yellow metals in the transfer case (?).
You'll get plenty of advise and opinions here some of which may seem contradictory so do your research and make your decision based on the facts.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
I can't comment on the E3 spark plugs. I just installed NGK Iridium plugs ($5.99 each at O'Reillys) and I am pleased with the performance so far.

There are many GL5 lubes that are GL4 compatible. I use Amsoil Severe Gear. The cogs in the transfer case are straight cut. Similar to a timing chain case.

As far as I'm aware GL5 classification is compatible with
all previous versions. I use Royal purple myself.

I was always under the impression that the higher the GL number was the better the coushining of the metal to metal contact. Is this not correct?

Yea for some reason GL 5 can not always replace GL 4, Unless it says GL 4 compatible don't trust a GL 5 in it's place, It's like oil voo doo scientific garb, Maybe Scottw can explain in one of his 2 cup of coffee posts, Scott?

This is correct. Not all GL5 lubes are GL4 compatible. If it is, it will specify "Can also be used where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended".
