This is a rant!

I vaguely remember something about the additives used. GL5 lubes are used where extreme temperatures and pressures are present as in applications where hypoid gears are used. In this high temp high pressure environment, the temp and pressure can reach a point to where the surface friction becomes too great for the lubricant molecules to adhere to the surface. Thus additives are added to provide a lubricant film that will adhere to the surface. This film is provided by reaction of various chemicals with the metal surfaces. Most contain sulfur, phosphorous, or chlorine which are corrosive to yellow metals like bronze, however a balance is achieved that will supply the adhesion performance required with minimal corrosive reaction.

Some GL5 lubricants have since started using additives that are yellow metal friendly. But again, not all have, so be sure GL5 lubricants specify it can also be used in GL4 applications. My memory may be off on the details a bit, but this is the jest of it.
