time for tires--suggestions??? 1 Year, 12 Months ago
I have a 2008 Road Star Silverado S. The time has come to put tires on the bike. I don't have any complaints about the original Bridgestone's that were on it but am looking for input. I have 5300 miles on the bike and the back tire is at the wear bars. I picked up a screw in the front tire so it's time to change that one as well. I live in northeastern Ohio and ride from the time the salt is off the roads through the first snow. I do ride in the rain.

My question is, should I go with the Bridgestone's again or a different tire? My uncle runs the Dunlop Elite 3's on his Road Glide and has nothing but good things to say about them. What's your opinion?

I think that the most miles for the least $$ is KENDA KRUZ. I had the original Dunlop 404 amd 2 Contintals go 12,000 each, the next Kenda went 15,000.

I have heard good things about Shinko, Kenda Kruz, Metzlers, but I have no experience with the Shinkos, and Kenda Kruz. I just bought a Metzler and am pleased so far.

+1 Kendra, Clifford if I got 10,000 out of 404 Dunlop I would of been happy more like 7000 for me, my first year on Kendra they seem like a much better tire then 404 my two cents

For value, lots of tire for my money, it was Kenda Kruz, and I have been very pleased with them.

Thanks for all the input. I'm going to do some more research on the Kenda Kruz. They seem to have a lot of positive feedback.

One more question for everyone: I've been reading up on different brake pads and a lot of people seem to like ceramic pads. I've put ceramics on a few different cars and every time I do it seems that they do everything everyone wants them to do (quiet, no dust, etc) except for STOP the vehicle like brakes should. I've NEVER been pleased with ceramic pads in a car. Should I roll the dice yet again and go with ceramics on the bike or not???

First question tires: I am on my third Avon Venom on the rear and first on the front. When it was time for me to change out the stock Bridgestone at 9,600 miles I wanted Metzlers, but they were not available anywhere. I wound up with Avon Venoms and have gotten 12,500 on the rear, 15K on the front still good for quite a while. We will see how long the next one lasts as a comparison. With all that said if they only lasted as much as the stock tire I would pay the extra for the Avon. Great traction wet or dry, smooth, and quiet compared to the Skidstone stocker, and better life. In addition the Venom rear tire has a reinforced sidewall for additional load capacity!!
Second question: I changed out my stock pads on the rear at 22,500 miles and still have plenty of pad left. I put in the EBC organic pads as it is supposed to be less damaging to the rotor. The organic pads were very dusty, more black than you could believe, and much to my surprise were worn down to the metal at 7,800 miles. I have replaced them with EBC Sintered pads, as that is the only pad the Stealer stocked, would have to order Yamaha pads. I am pleased, much less dust, and better braking. I guess if my rotor wears out I will have to change it, but for now I am happy. The front pads were changed out at 24,000 miles same EBC organic pads and they are almost shot, just over 6,000 miles later. I think I will go with the sintered pads up front soon.
Hope that helps.
