Lets see you tell the FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION that! I worked full time as a mechanic on small privately owned Cessna, Beech, Piper etc. from 1965 thru 2005 and have had loads of fun dealing with them SOBs. I still do a little part time work on planes. FAA inspectors do rubber stamp and sign paperwork specifically approveing things!

Clifford,
With all do respect, I am also from the Aviation industry (retired after 25 years), and the rubber stamp that you are refering to is post inspection. It is not certification of the manufacture on a consumer good. FAA rubber stamps the finished maintenance as inspected and passed, not approved. That is essentially what FMVSS 218 is for. To serve as a regulation of how to pass their litmus test. The differences between what the FAA does and what NHTSA does is huge.

Most of the time I wear one, but sometimes I don't , is it safer with one? In my opinion yes, just like our SEAT BELT LAW, but most of time I don't wear one, is it safer wearing your seat belt? In my opinion yes. BUT I WANT IT TO BE MY RIGHT TO CHOOSE IF I WANT TO WEAR A HELMET OR NOT, WHETHER I WEAR A SEAT BELT OR NOT. I PERSONALLY DON'T LIKE EITHER LAW TELLING ME I HAVE TO WEAR ONE, THAT'S NOT FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

I wear a helmet (full-face) because of the protection of my eyes from the wind more than anything else. I never felt "cool" wearing goggles, and I gotta have something ... just can't take the wind in my eyes when riding w/o windshield.
I've ridden around my city block once or twice without a helmet, but I feel it just gives me a better experience with one on. Less wind noise, and if I crash under 30mph, it may just keep me alive (over 30mph, it'll probably preserve my head so they can identify the body).

I believe it should be an individual choice, but, I wear a DOT helmet every time I ride. Had one save me once (Cracked a Bell in two) worn one ever since..no exceptions.

So, it doesn't seem to bother anyone that the government has a standard that is aimed to the manufacture being applied to the consumer in the way of illegal stops, and fines?
Or that testing is random (in other words, not ALL helmets are tested), and you have just about a
50-50 chance of purchasing one that will pass the NHTSA testing?

Of course it does. We should ALL get used to Big Brother telling us what to do, say, eat, live and, well, die. But, I did promise to keep it civil.
