if the batt is still hooked up just bump the starter
make sure the trans is not in gear.
or,on the two gears you see put a socket on the little one and turn.
the little is the crank shaft.

justin,i see your replacing the cam & lifters and in case you weren't aware you need to use some grey type moly paste assembly lube on the cam lobes and bottoms of liftes fpr breakin.

You also need to use oil on sides of the lifters and no grey assemblylube there.

You should also run a bike specific oil that generally has a decent zddp/zinc & phos lvl thats also required for breakin and post breakin too for onging protection when runnng a FT cam & lifters like are in the R* motor.

When you fire up the motor be in a position to either ride it (with no idle time) for a min of 20 mins or if you can't ride it set idle speed to at least 1600 rpm & taking it up to 2k rpms at times too for 15-20 mins to breakin the new FT cams/lifters before dropping it back to the normal rec 900 rpm idle.

So in the case of doing breakin sitting still you must run at least 2 20" box fans on hi speed facing the motor from the front (1 fan on eash side of the front forks facing the motor) to ensure the motor doesnt overheat sitting still for breakin of cams/lifters.

Post new cam/lifter breakin you should change oil & filter again with motor still hot to remove/drain all the assembly lube and metal particles from the carnkcase oil that were generated when the new cams/lifters were breaking into eachother .

Yes thats a pia and a little costly to do the post breakin oil & filter change but thats the right way to do it when breaking in FT cams/lifters.

Good luck.

Thanks, bumping the starter worked great. Now i'm stuck at oil delivery tube, it says to remove it from the other side around 11 oclock. i see a bolt, but it's just to the cover. can anyone give a picture of this? the oil delivery tube that runs up to the rear cylinder was already unbolted when I took the cover off.

it's late, thankfully. i may call it a night soon, i need to get cam lube anyways and nothing that has it is open at this hour.

I wasn't sure what the oil delivery tube had to do with things so i went ahead and removed the cam cover. I found the oil delivery tube is still connected on that side. seemingly, while it's connected, i cannot remove the cam cover. I have pushed and pulled in all different directions, with no luck. it doesn't seem like it's connected to anything on the other side of the engine, it moves about pretty freely. however i cannot figure out how to get it out so i can get the cover off to get at the cams.

along with the new gaskets you are going to order you might order the little O-rings for that oil tube.

All the gaskets are new in the engine, it had hte recall done, and ran maybe 10 minutes since then, so I was going to try and get away with re-using them.

What's that other stuff though, blue lock or something to put on bolts?

Re:how to turn the engine to line up the cams 1 Year, 11 Months ago
you can if they are metal. when I did my cam shaft inspection the gaskets were not metal and stuck to the casing. the oil pipe has 4 very small holes on the shaft(they spray oil on the cam lobes) and two very large on one end. if the O-rings leak they will cause problems.
