The decomp solenoid is not a common problem but has cropped up a few times, the lever or spoon as some call it can bend and not depress the rod far enough, you need to take the cover off it and check to see if it is bent...DocShadow has had some dealings with it....

I had the same issue on my 05, It turned out to be loose Ground wire to the battery, I just tightened it. When I had issues with it not starting I would jiggle it and it started right up, The wire coming loose was my issue.

Just an FYI,i just installed the larger high capacity MaxAir battery cables and i noticed a difference right off the bat on how fast the cranked over before it actually fired up cold and its esp helpfull when hot which also has considerably faster cranking now too.

The battery cables on your avg 10-12hp riding mower are approx same size/amp carrying capacity then the R* has so it's no wonder the over sized Maxair batt cables do such a great job though i thnk thier size is a little overkill.

It was a mod that i could see made a diff right off the bat post install in my bikes case with a less then 1 yr old stock 270cca battery that was just put in the bike when i bought 10/09 & i feel the repl MaxAir batt cables for the R* are well worth the $ & 1hr effort to install them.

When the new batt decides to take a dump someday i will repl it with a hi perf 310 CCA AGM batt and if starter goes someday i will repl it with the aftermarket warrior type high trq starter and higher amp rated starter solenoid while i am at it too.

Scott
