Change Oil Filter And Not Oil 1 Year, 11 Months ago
I've been thinking that using high grade Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic it would probably be a good idea to change the filter midstream and keep the oil in place. If I take the oil filter off to put new one on am I going to get an oil gusher?

Have SuperTech Filter on now.

I've heard of changing out the oil but not the filter. Never heard of changing the filter but not the oil. I'm curious:What is your reasoning behind wanting to do this?

I guess he worried about the contaminations more than the oil worn out. I guess there will be some oil gushing out, use a clean container to catch them and reuse the oil should be OK.
But I would use less expensive oil and change the oil at the same time to save the trouble of keeping record of the oil and oil filter separately. When comes to sell the bike, the buyer may not be crazy about the idea. Could be a deal killer.

i donŽt get it either

unless the engine is totally knackered, one change with filter and the next without is more than safe. on a rebuilt engine i like to change the filter with the first couple of oil changes(and cut it open and look), but after that, one with and one without.

some like a new filter every time, but hey, whatever youŽre happy with.

personally iŽd wait till the next oil change.

Shacky, you will loose about a filter full of oil when you remove it.

I use Amsoil and plan on running it for 7-8,000 miles. At 4,000 I am going to change the SuperTech filter and put on another SuperTech filter.
Amsoil says you can double your drain and that is what I plan on doing.
As long as the engine and oil are cold, I can't see where a guy should lose more than what is in the filter.

I used to do that on my truck. My Ford Ranger has two full size filters and holds 7 qts of oil. I use mobile one syn and every 5000 miles pulled the filters and installed new filters and topped off the oil that was removed while replacing filters. I ran the oil for 15,000 before replacing oil.
Just my thoughts, I wouldn't do that to a motorcycle, especially an air-cooled engine such as the big v-twin. oil breaks down faster in a air-cooled engine compared to a water-cooled. Replace both filter and oil on your bike.
No proof, just my opinion

I was going to do the same thing as the oil is good for about 5k,so at 2500 a few bucks into a new filter would just insure that the oil is staying clean..a small investment for a little peace of mind..

This is what I was thinking. Mobil 1 V-Twin is going to last longer than the filter so why not change filter mid stream regardless of how many miles you put between oil changes. And Super Tech filters are cheap.

What's the deal change the oil change the filter. The point in changing the oil is to replenish the engine with clean oil as is the filter. If you want to change it more often don't use synthetic oil and use regular oil. It can be bought at discount prices as are the filters.
