Electronic Mods and Additions Preview 1 Year, 11 Months ago
|
|
I've been busy planning and working on my R* the last several weeks. I'll be posting details but here is a preview.
Roadstar Remix 2
Fuse block and distribution panel mod based on a mod found on the VTX forum. Wires soldered and butted, heat shrinked and labeled. Also, air ride momentary back up switch hidden under fuse block
Shelf added to WOC fairing to house phone and iPod Classic
New Alpine PDX 4.150 digital amp testing; added to right saddlebag. Gain set with digital multimeter (AC)
Joe Florida 120 LED multi-color 16 function testing
More to come...lot's of hours and trial and error...big fun.

I'm going to have to come down to your place and have you rewire my bike. Very nice, clean job. Glad to see everything's working now.

Fairing? Saddlebag? Wish i had them just for somewhere to put some wiring!
Firefox there isn't a fire UNTIl you let the smoke out of the wires. Don't ever do that, if the smoke comes out nothign works!

Where did you find a spot for the fuse block? I nearly pulled the whole electrical system out trying to find space...
Fantastic job, btw!

If they don't see me they'll certainly hear me with my Sideburners and a 600W amp!

Hey, you got it buddy...I owe you big time.
I learned a lot doing this. I read online every night about relays, SPDT switching, Ohm's Law, using a multimeter to set amp gain, etc. While I was at it I also changed my gear oil, added Iridiums, and installed Speed Bleeders (I was embarrassed at how my brake fluid looked).

Nice work! If it was me I'd still be trying to put the fire out
Hey, I was watching for this too. This was my first time tackling something like this. You can see the soldering gun and heat gun are spanking brand new; along with lot's of new Dremel pieces.
I read and re-read lot's threads on R*, VTX, and HD forums...good ideas to common problems out there.

I got an idea from the VTX forum to use a Bussmann fuse block (only about $10 at Autozone/Oreilly/Pep or $16 from Napa) and added a ground panel. Space was at a premium as you know. I first tried to fit it in the right side cover but with my fuel pump relo I was out of space. So, I test fit it in the left cover and it worked by reversing the position of the dist panel (this also provided a lip to position it to the OEM fuse box cover). I wired mine as always hot but it could also be run through a relay to be switched. If I add GPS or heated gear that will be switched I'll remove the carb heater and use that slot.
What's good about this fuse block is that it does not have a large border. I've seen some even come with a cover but I'm experimenting with crafting a cover out of the package it came it. To prevent shorting you cut off a piece of the buss bar and use one of the positions as the inbound positive from the battery with a 30 amp fuse in that position to power the rest of the buss (protected under the fuse slot cover). Bussmann 6 Gang
BWD makes one looks like the one I made but its border is huge and the dist panel faces front (which forces negative wires to face out and may not fit under the cover). I wanted those wires to face the bike as you see in the pics. BWD block
